COMMUNITY OAK PLANTING DAY

"Let's replant our precious oak trees!"
In the aftermath of the wildfires, help re-oak Napa with native oak trees.
Now more than ever,
Napa needs oak tree regeneration.
Volunteers will help clear weeds, plant acorns, and place protective materials and mulch over plantings.
Meet at the hillside above the dog park at Alston Park. All ages welcome.
Dress for outdoor gardening; bring a water bottle and mug for coffee. Gloves and tools
are provided.
Heavy rain cancels.

COMPOST CORNER - FURNACE FILTERS
Q. A heating and air-conditioning professional came to my house today for the HVAC fall check-up. He changed the furnace filter (as is surely happening in far greater numbers than usual throughout the Valley since the wildfires).
I asked where he disposes of the used filters. His response:
"They can be recycled in the blue bin. At least that's what I do and nobody's told me not to."
That doesn't sound right to me. Where should the used filters go?
A. T
hey can't go in the recycling. That's because the filters are typically made from a mix of materials. Depending on the type, they could have fiberglass, metal wire, and/or plastic to go along with the paper frame.
The used filters are also full of particles of dust, smoke, etc. which could cause contamination of recycled products. So, used air filters need to go in the trash.
There are actually washable, reusable air filters available but how well they work doesn't seem clear. In part, it depends on the age and type of furnace you have. I suggest doing some reading online.
From CanDo: BTW, the HVAC technician redeemed himself. He reminded me that though many of us are changing furnace filters in an effort to clean the air in our homes post wildfires, a furnace filter actually isn't designed for that purpose. It's designed to keep dust out of the furnace. A home or room air purification system is where one needs to go if cleaner indoor air is your goal.

Martin Luther King Day of Action and Compassion
On January 15 there is a county-wide event organized by a steering committee composed of representatives from local government, faith-based and nonprofit agencies.
Your job?
Attend a handful of meetings accompanied by a CanDo Board member. That's once or twice a month for the two months leading to the mid-January event. Share your thoughts. Help organize and possibly lead activities on MLK Day, Mon., Jan. 15, 2018. Next meeting:

LGBTQ Informational Forum Series
Collaborating with LGBTQ Connection, PFLAG, and the Napa and St. Helena Libraries, CanDo helped create two very well-received community forums in 2017. They focused on the new language of sexual and gender identity. We're planning another forum for early 2018.

Napa Valley Community Housing (NVCH)
Families with children, couples, and individuals are in need of housing.
Napa's Home Sharing Match-Up Program is looking for compassionate home providers who have space in their home to rent temporarily or permanently.
How it Works:
NVCH conducts one-on-one interviews and criminal background checks with participants. They work with participants and their families to check personal references.
- NVCH conducts background and credit checks for participants.
- NVCH provides resources and referrals to other local government and nonprofits agencies in the area.
- After a match is made, NVCH may help mediate through any difficult issues at no cost.

COMMUNITY STORE #napastrong

This is a pop-up store that is a resource for all families affected by valley fires. They have consolidated donations and are making them available to community members impacted by the wildfires at the free store. They are looking for people to help merchandise, support customers, sort, restock, etc.

CLIMATE CHANGE: TAKING IT LOCAL

While climate change is a global issue, many solutions can and must be found locally. An interactive slideshow demonstrates how even small changes can positively impact our environment. You'll hear the latest information on Napa County's Climate Action Plan (CAP) and the importance of reducing short-lived climate pollutants such as methane and black carbon.

Responsible and Respectful Kids
In this upbeat, informational presentation, parents will be pleasantly surprised by the reasons to "zip-it" and will find comfort and confidence in their ability to parent their children, all while preparing them for the world outside their home. The presenter provides insight as to why all the over parenting, nagging, hovering, and helicopter parenting is not working out for you or your child. She also identifies five of the biggest parenting obstacles and how you can "clear away the clutter" and create clarity that will guide your family for years.
