Across Syria, many gardens conceal the dead bodies of activists and protesters who took to the streets during the early periods of the uprising against the Ba'athist government in 2011. These domestic burials play out a continuing collaboration between the living and the dead -- each providing safety, truth and a voice for each other.

ILLUMINUS Lights Up Downtown Boston!

More than 50,000 people flocked with fascination to the ILLUMINUS Light Festival spread throughout Downtown Crossing on Friday and Saturday nights. Festival goers were treated to fantastic light art installations projected onto buildings, interactive lit-up cubes, performance artists, spandexed roving musical bicyclists and more.
"Light Spray" by Matthieu Tercieux at
The Steps was an interactive screen for festival goers to draw on.

The ILLUMINUS Light Festival is a yearly Boston festival having previously taken place in the Fenway and SoWa areas. This was the first year that Downtown Crossing hosted the spectacular free, family-friendly two-night event, as the Downtown Boston BID partnered with ILLUMINUS and luminArtz to present the festival.

"The art installations attract people on a global scale, and I wanted that for Boston," said luminArtz Co-founder Lyn Burke to BostInno. "It's important to give these artists platforms to showcase their work. We're building something not only to support and sustain artists in Boston, but it also acts as an economic engine for all the businesses involved."
"ILLUMINUS" at 294 Washington Street
featured several projections onto the
building by façade artists.

"Seeing thousands of people of all ages come together to celebrate local artists in Downtown Crossing was an incredible sight," said BID Senior Planner Anita Lauricella. "People danced in the streets. Families participated in interactive art together, watched performing artists, and it all happened with the backdrop of downtown Boston's history and architecture. We've already received great feedback, and people are looking forward to more events like ILLUMINUS in downtown Boston."
"Gridlock" by Masary Studios was an integration of a physical musical instrument. The public was invited to explore and create with the piece.

Projects were located in several locations, including on Summer Street Plaza outside of Macy's, The Steps (Franklin and Washington streets), along Washington Street and Walgreens Plaza (Washington and School streets).

"I came on Friday night to participate in ' Connection Through Projection' and was amazed by the rest of the festival. I loved it so much I came back on Saturday night, too!" said festival participant Cat Moniz. Connection Through Projection provided viewers  with a glimpse of Cuba through video and dancers in Cuba. Participants were encouraged to form Timba lines fusing cuban dance styles like salsa, casino, afro-cuban, cuban contemporary and more. The goal was to get people moving together on the streets of Boston like they do in Havana, Cuba.
"Aurora" by Karim Badwan illuminated the overhang of Macy's on Summer Street.

The Downtown Boston BID would like to acknowledge and thank ILLUMINUS, luminArtz, the artists, the City of Boston and the Boston Police Department, for making the festival a great success. The BID would also like to thank all of the participating property owners and managers, including The Markley Group, Synergy Investments, Fidelity Real Estate, Clarion Partners, Colonnade Management, Friends of Post Office Square, Midwood Investment & Development and Millennium Partners.
