MAKING AN IMPACT...

When I started my service term with the Youth Net program, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had never really worked with at-risk youth before. I was nervous that I wouldn't have the skills or patience for it, especially with still being in school. I thought that I might end up hating it and regret my decision. I've known for a long time that I want to work with kids and was looking for an opportunity to work one-on-one with kids. I wanted so badly to make a difference in at least one child's life but I didn't know if I would be able to do that.

After the first few months, I feel confident saying that all of my fears were for nothing. Working at Youth Net definitely has its challenges every single day, but I care about the kids I work with and I love being able to interact with them. I know I can't change every child's life and I might not even be able to make a huge difference for just one of them. However, I've been seeing little changes in some of them and that's what I strive for now. Whether it's a third grader who struggles with anger coming up to me and giving me a hug to say sorry after he acted out or a first grader smiling when he gets more and more words right while reading or a mom saying she wants her son to do his homework with me because she knows he works best one-on-one with me, it's all worth it. I was looking for an opportunity to make connections with kids and I found it through my service with AmeriCorps.

Youth Net is a comprehensive afterschool program for referred youth ages 8 to 18. Programming focuses on individual outcomes related to academic performance, social emotional learning and healthy active living. Your gift to United Way supports programs, like Youth Net, that helped 972 local students obtain and sustain academic success in 2016. Your generosity is making an impact in our community.
