Deadline for MEDC Tuition Scholarships Quickly Approaching 

MEDC Tuition scholarships are being accepted for professional development courses in 2018. Members of the Mississippi Economic Development Council can apply for tuition scholarship to attend the 2018 True South Basic Economic Development course set for September 17 - 20, 2018. Department of Defense Higher Education Learning Community Established

In an effort to better understand the role of higher education institutions in supporting defense industry adjustment, the Office of Economic Adjustment's Defense Industry Adjustment (OEA-DIA) program has created a peer learning community focused on this topic. This effort, chaired by Dr. Greg Jones (University of Utah) and Dr. Chad Miller (University of Southern Mississippi), is designed to allow DIA grantees to dig deeper into the issues and perspectives facing grantees who work at or for local college and university economic development programs. 

This learning community is a new effort, which recently kicked off with an introductory meeting held in Long Beach, CA, in conjunction with University Economic Development Association's (UEDA) Annual Summit meeting. Key identified challenge areas included the following:
  • Building credibility and presence for DoD diversification research
  • Connecting defense firm managers and industry leadership with higher education
  • Sharing tools and resources across programs and regions 
Dr. Bill Smith Receives Emeritus Faculty Honor null

Retired Professor Dr. William C. "Bill" Smith has received emeritus status and will continue to assist the economic development program including being a lecturer for the ED 646 Marketing & Business Development class. Bill had a 37-year tenure  at Southern Miss and was the department chair prior to his retirement in 2016. The emeritus designation is awarded to faculty members who have served The University of Southern Mississippi with distinction for an extended time. The status recognizes faculty who have excelled throughout their careers at the University. 

An emeritus faculty member is an honored, non-voting member of the department of which he or she was a member before retirement. Although no longer tenured or eligible for employment benefits, an emeritus faculty member is entitled to many faculty privileges.
