AVNC & LFNC TOWN HALL on :
The Trump Administration Travel Ban and
New Policy Expanding Federal Detention/Deportation

When:Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at 7 pm
Where:Glenfeliz Elementary School Auditorium
3955 Glenfeliz Blvd., LA CA  90039
Much recent attention has been paid to the
following two topics:
Travel Ban
On Thursday March 16, 2017, persons from six countries
(Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Yemen) without a green card
will be denied entry into the US for 90 days.
Did you know that Federal government can add more countries to that list,
and extend the ban on entry beyond 90 days?
Expansion of Federal Detention and Deportation Effort s
Our local media have broadcasted footage of Federal Immigration and
Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detaining a father of four after dropping
off his daughter to school in Lincoln Heights. Media reported that the man detained
is a married father of four living in the US for 25 years with a misdemeanor DUI conviction in 2009. Various civil rights organizations have characterized this
detention as very different from previous practices.
What is the new detention/deportation policy for ICE agents following
President Trump's Executive Order Expanding Deportation Efforts?
What will the Town Hall Cover ?
We have a number of organizations who will provide information
on the two topics above:

ACLU
Following a brief rundown on executive powers by a retired law professor, we will have an attorney from the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) explain the Travel Ban and the Expansion of Detention/Deportation Efforts by ICE Agents.  Additional topics will include new patterns of Federal enforcement of Immigration Laws and a primer to "Know Your Rights" regarding these laws and if you encounter ICE agents.

LA City and County Offices of Immigrant Affairs
We will also have the County Office of Immigrant Affairs and the Mayor's Office
of Immigrant Affairs discuss their initiatives, including the new $10 million
LA Justice Fund to provide legal defense.

LAPD
LAPD will also reiterate its position that as a local law enforcement agency,
it does not enforce Federal Immigration laws.

Elected Officials
State Asemblywoman Laura Friedman will be joining us to give her perspective.
Other officials are reviewing schedules and may also join.

The Atwater Village and Los Feliz Neighborhood Councils
recognize that recent developments have affected our lives,
and those of our neighbors and other stakeholders.
We hope that this event will be a meaningful forum
to obtain the information you need.

Refreshments will be served.
