A Message from Laura Nevins |
Envision National Youth Leadership Forums (NYLF) are designed to prepare students to turn their career and life aspirations into reality. The programs are developed by educators and subject-matter professionals, and each one creates a hands-on educational experience which fosters critical thinking skills. Several FA students have participated in Envision programs with great success in recent years. Below are a few examples of the programs which will be offered by Envision next summer.
NYLF MEDICINE gives students a chance to gain real-world medical career experience and explore professional opportunities in the expanding fields of medicine and health care. Spend ten amazing days on the campus of the renowned Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where you will explore a variety of specialized medical fields through the program's exciting, hands-on interactive curriculum, small group activities, and true-to-life medical workshops such as testing your skills at performing a simulated fracture reduction. Join other high school students from around the country for this extraordinary opportunity to learn from and interact with subject matter experts, gain invaluable hands-on experience by assuming the role of a physician, and be empowered to fully realize the power of your potential.
NYLF BUSINESS INNOVATION
is specifically designed to provide high school students with a foundation in business, while developing the skills to lead the next innovative revolution.
You'll discover your passion for entrepreneurship and innovation by competing in an exciting startup-style simulation that takes you from ideation to product launch, and challenges you to make the critical decisions of an entrepreneur! The NYLF Business Innovation program lasts six days and takes place at Yale University.
NYLF ENGINEERING and TECHNOLOGY offers students the opportunity to complete an engaging, student-driven group project designed to explore select fields on a deeper level using a problem-based approach. Students will work in groups to solve one of the 14 Grand Challenges for Engineering in the 21st Century, as set forth by the National Academy of Engineering. The program is offered at three locations: Georgia Tech, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering (MA), and the University of California, Berkeley.
Please click
HERE to email me if you would like to receive information about Envision or to have your name added to either the Medical or Business nomination list. Click
HERE to access a complete list of NYLF programs. The catalog also includes opportunities for Lower School and Middle School students.
Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who bought poinsettias and greenery this year! The Parent Association uses those funds to host the Back-to-School BBQ and Teacher Appreciation events as well as to support the Readathon, Lower School Garden, Oyster Roast, etc.
Thank you also to all who came to the Parent Association meeting and Uniform Sale this past Thursday.
Rachael Lee and Nurse Byers gave a great overview of social issues affecting our students, Greer Brown provided an informative update on the Head of School search, and John Pope spoke to the importance of contributing to the Annual Fund.

NHS Students Support Communities in Schools
|
National Honor Society (NHS) students had a great experience serving Communities in Schools at the Burroughs-Mollette Elementary School Fall Festival on Friday. Frederica NHS students painted faces, painted nails, ran all of the game booths and had a lot of fun with the students. Our NHS students had as much fun as the students at BME. It was our pleasure to serve alongside Communities in Schools and the BME PTA and staff.

FA Competitive Cheer Team Community Service
|
It was a spectacular time at Addington Place of Brunswick on Halloween night. Members of the FA Competition Cheer team spent their Halloween night helping with Addington Place's Halloween Carnival. It was a fun night filled with candy, games and laughter. The Knights cheerleaders helped with the cakewalk, various activities for the community children, and even showed their artistic side with a little face painting. Special thanks to Brittany Rowland, the community relations coordinator, and her team for allowing the cheerleaders the opportunity to help with this event. The Addington Place is an assisted living facility, and the cheerleaders were blessed with the opportunity to spend time with their residents and with the ghouls and gals of Brunswick who came trick-or-treating. The cheerleaders hope to continue their new relationship with Addington Place and plan to revisit and help with future events.

Middle School Second Grade Leadership Program
|
One of our Middle School goals is to provide opportunities for students to grow in responsibility and leadership skills. During the Middle School Community Service class last week, Mrs. Lee prepared the students to lead the Second Grade classroom guidance time. The students facilitated a team building game that involved listening, sportsmanship, and problem solving skills. The Second Graders loved being with our older students and had a great time while growing in these lifelong skills! Our Middle School students led with great enthusiasm and enjoyment.

Fifth Grade Grammar Football League
|
In honor of the Frederica football team advancing to the next round of the State playoffs and the UGA Dawgs being ranked #1 in the College Football Playoff poll, FA fifth graders competed in the GFL (Grammar Football League) on Friday. After a brief hype video, the draft cards were distributed and the players proudly took the field. Grammar skills were put to the test as the students earned points for their respective teams. As the clock ran down, all players could be proud that they left it all on the field. Go FA Grammar Knights!

Fourth Grade Jekyll Island Turtle Center Visit
|
Last week, Fourth Grade went to the Jekyll Island Turtle Center for a class on animal adaptations. The children had a great time learning all about the different kinds of turtles, seeing the turtles in the hospital and working their way through the interactive education center. Afterwards, they went for a picnic at Great Dunes and enjoyed rousing games of tag and Duck, Duck, Goose!
Click HERE to see more photos of their visit.

A Healthy Fourth Grade Halloween
|
... well, there were certainly healthy options. The students enjoyed an awesome Halloween celebration.
|
Third Graders Energized by Circuits Project |
Third grade learned about different kinds of circuits last week in science. First, they built parallel circuits using copper wire and light bulbs. They then continued to learn more about electricity using snap circuits. The students were able to follow an instruction manual to help them create different kinds of circuits and also use their creativity to build their own circuits. They had a great time!
