We had an amazing week of Homecoming activities and sporting events. Thank you to everyone who helped support our school, students, teachers, administrators and coaches!
To top it all off, WKRG News Channel 5 highlighted Coach Ronn Lee as Coach of the Week. We are so proud of our coaching staff and student athletes, that we want to show our support by spreading the word through the community.

St. Luke's Senior and Honor Council President:

My name is William Brandyburg, a 17-year-old senior at St. Luke's High School, and I am a Mobile Kappa Leaguer. I am very involved in school activities, playing football, basketball, and running track. I also participate in Hi-Q and Scholars' Bowl, serve as the Vice President of my senior class, and am President of the Honor Council. As a Kappa Leaguer, I serve as 2nd Vice President, in charge of tracking service hours and directing community service projects.

Why Did I Join Kappa League?
I decided to join Mobile Kappa League when I was in 9th grade at the suggestion of one of my coaches. I honestly didn't have particular expectations for my Kappa League membership at that time; I had just been told that the program would be a great fit for me.
What Has Kappa League Done for Me?
Entering my third year as a Kappa Leaguer, I am more well-rounded than I otherwise would be. From the Kappa League, I have gained confidence in myself and the ability to better navigate various social situations. Through Kappa League, I have also had the pleasure of meeting and befriending several people. Kappa League has allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and better myself.

St. Luke's Chess Club
The 2016-2017 school year saw the introduction of a new organization at St. Luke's. We saw the formation of the St. Luke's Chess Club in the fall of 2016. With a group of 20-25 students, we began meeting every morning in Room 402 from 7:30-8:00 to learn and play the "Game of Kings".
Later during the year, Room 402 also saw chess players at lunch time munching on chicken strips and playing an ancient game played by millions of people.
With the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, the Chess Club added Chess Club Officers to its organization. An historical step was taken as Kasey Hernandez-Sexton (President), Thomas Watts (Vice President), Virginia Grace Merrick (Secretary), Mohammed Shahrouj (Publicity Officer), and Swayam Patel (Member-at-Large) took the reins as the first Chess Club Officer Corps to lead our Chess Club into a year of growth and enjoyment.
Chess has a long history. It is believed to have been started back in the 7th century in India. Its original name was Chaturanga. It slowly moved westward into Persia (modern day Iran) and then made its way to Europe in the 9th century.
October 14th is National Chess Day.
Since the 14th is a Saturday, we here at St. Luke's decided to make the whole week
(16th-20th October) our very own St. Luke's Chess Awareness Week.
Some of the activities that week will include daily announcements with new pieces of information about chess, Challenge A Faculty/Staff Member event, a slide presentation during assembly, cookies in the shape of chess pieces, chess seminars to help those interested in knowing how to play chess, and hopefully a chance for our parents and other family members to come in during the mornings to play their students in a game of chess.

YDL Announcement:
September 25th-29th, was a great week to be a
Little Wildcat!
- Our XC boys and girls teams both won the Beat the Heat Meet at Faith Academy. Emily Miles and Garrett Dolbear were the top overall boy and girl at the meet. Other top 10 finishers included Matthew Pearce, Brody Hale, Elliott Merrick, Rowan Yeager, and Nerys Stommell.
- The City Championship meet will be Thursday, October 5th, at Faith Academy. Come out and support these running Wildcats as they try to repeat last year's clean sweep in the Championship!
- Our YDL Football teams both had great games against some stiff competition. Talon Uptagraft scored his first touchdown for the the 3rd/4th grade team. Brody Hale, Tyree Durgin, Garrett Dolbear, and William McDonough led the 5/6th grade defense with 3 sacks and fumble recovery.
- Our 4/5th and 6th grade Volleyball teams both lost heartbreakers to Mobile Christian last week in 3 sets. Emily Miles, Cammie Waite, and Claire Seelhorst led the 6th graders as they fell short in a hotly contested match. Avery Van Alstine, Sophie Bitzer, and Arianna Ori paced the 4th/5th grade team as they almost won their first match of the year. They look to rebound Saturday against Bayside at Cottage Hill. They will be at home October 7th hosting St. Paul's. Come out and support these future State Champs!

- Don't forget to come see our littlest Wildcats in action on the Japonica campus. 1st/2nd grade Flag Football is every Thursday at 5:30. K3-K5 soccer is every Sunday starting at 2!

Mirko Pasta, a locally owned and operated Italian restaurant located in Legacy Village off Dauphin Street, wants to show their support for St. Luke's. During St. Luke's Night, Mirko will donate 10% of a participating table's total bill
(before tax and tip)
back to St. Luke's.
How to Participate in St. Luke's Night:

*Present your server with the attached pre-made ticket. Don't forget to fill in your information and tell your server that you're there to support St. Luke's.

University Campus: We will host a breakfast for Veterans and their families from
7:00-8:00
. Then we will have a special assembly from
8:00-9:00
in the theater with guest speaker John Williams, our city councilman.
Japonica Campus: Veterans Day program at
10:00 in the church, followed by a reception in St. Luke's Hall.
