"Thank You Safe Harbor" From Gunner the Puppy
My Thanksgiving came early this year when Safe Harbor saved my life. I'm only ten months old and, like most puppies, like to chew stuff. Well, after I swallowed a mouthful of stringy carpet, I got super sick and my young owners couldn't afford to take care of me. They took me to a low-cost clinic in Denver, where the vet knew I was fading fast. She convinced them to relinquish me to the clinic and then called Safe Harbor for help. Their volunteer arrived in a flash and got me to the ER at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital.

The ER team was waiting for us. I was so weak and in a lot of pain; I couldn't even stand and had a high fever. Turns out that "tasty" carpet was stuck not only in my stomach, but strings of it were way far down in my intestines causing dangerous punctures. I had a life-threatening septic infection and was given a fifty-fifty chance of survival with emergency abdominal surgery and intensive care. I heard one vet say, "He's trying to die".  I didn't like the sound of that...and neither did the optimistic folks at Safe Harbor who knew I was in top-notch medical hands.

After several hours of surgery, I had around the clock care in the ICU where I floated in and out of consciousness. I could feel my paws touching the Rainbow Bridge. A volunteer visited me every day and whispered all about the wonderful life that was waiting for me. The ICU staff and internal medicine specialists had no intention of letting me "go," and I could feel lots of prayers and good wishes coming from all around.

And guess what? Little by little I got better.  A few days later I was out in the sunshine with friends eating deli turkey and fetching a toy!  "You're a miracle puppy!" I heard people say. But you know what?
Safe Harbor made that miracle of "many happy days ahead" possible for me.
Your generous support makes it possible for us to help pups like Gunner.  We hope you will think of Safe Harbor as you make your year-end giving plans.

Colorado Gives Day is December 5th
It's just about a month until Colorado Gives Day - Dec. 5th. Why give? EVERY single Lab who makes their way to Safe Harbor sees our Vet for routine medical care, but there are lots of stories about Labs who need more. Way more. Take Callie. She came to us this year having fallen out of a truck. Our surgeons tried very hard to save her back leg, but in the end, it had to be amputated. She's doing great with her new family, but only because of your help. Then there is little Gunner who came to us with an internal blockage and sepsis. We almost lost him, but he's convalescing and doing great. These are just two of many reasons why Colorado Gives Day is so important to us.

Dear Labby: My Family is Leaving for the Holidays...But What About Me?

Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters "Labby" from both four and two-legged folks.

Dear Labby,

Photo courtesy of Kateri Nelson - all rights reserved
My people are all a-twitter about going someplace over the holidays--someplace that sounds pretty far away like Ohio! It also sounds like they'll be going without "Yours Truly" who is, of course, the master of fun, but doesn't have the required photo ID for a plane ticket. There's much talk about what to pack, turkeys, Granny, presents, etc.  I think everyone may have forgotten that I'll need a place to hang my leash while they're away.  Oh Abby, please tell them what to do!

Mildly Panicking,

Dear Petey-

Please don't fret!  I've got some great tips so you'll be safe, sound and happy while they're away.  This evening cuddle up to your folks, gaze at them with your big brown eyes and ask:

1.  Have you visited and picked out a nice boarding kennel and made a reservation for me yet? If the answer is "yes", excellent!  If the answer is "no," tell them to hop on it pronto .  These places fill up fast around the holidays, plus they need to know who all is coming so they have enough staff to keep everyone comfy and safe.  FYI - some places require an "interview" to make sure everyone will get along before a guest can stay.

2.  Do you have all my shots up-to-date including bordetella?  That's the one for kennel cough.  It's not serious, but you don't want me to come home with a runny nose and a cough that sounds like a honking goose!  Some places require a series of two canine influenza shots, too.

3.  Will you please remember to bring my special food and meds?  And please be sure my ID tag is totally up to date just in case a gate gets left open and my curiosity gets the better of me.

You can ask, but I don't think they'll let you bring your iPawd . . . it might get chewed up or worse!
Have a delightful stay while your family is away!

Love,
~Labby
Volunteer Spotlight: The Sicard Family
For Laura, Scott, and Grace Sicard, volunteering with Safe Harbor is a true family affair. After their black lab passed away, the family was not quite sure whether they were ready to jump back into having a lab of their own. After learning about Safe Harbor through social media, Laura knew that fostering would be the perfect fit for their family. Accordingly, over the past year, the Sicard family has opened their home to many Safe Harbor pups looking for a soft place to land while searching for their forever homes.

Laura is amazed by the transformation that some of their foster dogs have made while in Safe Harbor's care. They fostered one dog who had been hit by a car and hadn't received proper medical care for his injuries. After Safe Harbor and the Sicard family intervened, that foster pup healed and found his forever family.

As to be expected from spending time with Safe Harbor's lovable labs, the family became very attached to the fosters. Their third foster, Lucy, made sure the family knew she was there to stay.  When asked how they knew Lucy was meant to be part of their family, Laura stated they all knew they would regret it if Lucy walked out their door with another family. Accordingly, they made Lucy a permanent member of the family, and she spends her days relishing the good life with her family and Miniature Pinscher sister, Jade.

Thank you Laura, Scott, and Grace!
