Pet Emergency Fund Success Story

Lindy, a darling 2 year old Pitbull mix, got into her foster mom's backpack and "investigated" an open bottle of ibuprofen . Lindy's foster mom found t he empty bottle and only one capsule and wasn't sure how many 200 mg capsules had been in the in the 20ct bottle when she left, meaning Lindy could have eaten quite a few.

Ibuprofen toxicosis in dogs can cause gastrointestinal hemorrhage/ulceration and, at higher doses, kidney failure so a ggressive treatment was initiated. She was first given a potent drug intravenously to make her vomit the remaining capsules in her stomach. She vomited, but no capsules were produced. Capsules are very quick to dissolve, so the lack of capsules did not surprise the vet staff. She was then given activated charcoal to bind to and remove the ibuprofen present in her gastrointestinal tract. She was also placed on intravenous fluids to flush her bloodstream of potential toxins that were attacking her kidneys.

Bloodwork was performed at the end of the first day to see if there had been any ill effects to her organ health. The results were good with no evidence of kidney failure! As it can take up to 72 hours for kidney damage to show up on bloodwork, she returned 12 hours later to repeat bloodwork. Still good results! After 72 hours, one final blood panel was performed to ensure she was still in the clear and she was! All has been well since!
