Annual Gathering - State of the Region Address 2017

The region archives state, "On October 18, 1827, John Quincy Adams was President of the United States, DeWitt Clinton was Governor of New York, M. Brown Jr. was President of the Board of Trustees of the Village of Rochester. This was the day delegates from nine churches met in the Court House of Rochester to organize the "Baptist Union of Rochester and Monroe County, Incorporated."

The nine churches, in order of their formation year were First Baptist Church Penfield, First Baptist Church of Parma (now Hilton Baptist), Greece Baptist Church, West Henrietta Baptist Church, First Baptist Church Rochester, Ogden Baptist Church, East Penfield Baptist Church, and First and Second Baptist Church Sweden.

"From its beginnings, the Baptist Union declared its interest in mission."  The first collective mission effort was to raise $1,000 to give Bibles to 17 million Burmese."  Just imagine. It is likely that those who have immigrated to the US in recent years had ancestors who were recipients of those Bibles.

Ogden Baptist Church Story  ChurchStory

With 13 pioneers as charter members, the Ogden Baptist Church was born on May 21, 1819 at a meeting in a schoolhouse. For several years the little group was unable to support a pastor or have its own house of worship. Elder Ely Stone of Wheatland supplied services held in barns, a log schoolhouse and in homes until about 1824 when a church was built near Ogden Center. The first regular pastor was Elder Harvey Blood.

In 1832-33 the present white frame church of colonial design was built at what then was known as Colby Corners, Spencerport.
For nearly 27 years, from 1832 to 1856 and again from 1858 to 1860, the Rev. Zenas Case was pastor. His service was the longest in the annals of the church.

In the early years, members were disciplined for dancing, using profanity, attending plays, working on the Sabbath, irregular attendance and other transgressions. Read more.

Important Update from ABC Puerto Rico PuertoRico

From Rev. Dr. Lee B. Spitzer, General Secretary:
I received a phone call from the office of Roberto Dieppa-Diaz, Interim Executive Minister of ABC Puerto Rico. The leadership wanted to convey their appreciation for all of the prayers and
expressions of support they have received since Hurricane Maria devastated their island. They are continuing the damage assessment process, and have asked that visits by volunteers to the island be delayed at this point until that assessment is complete and conditions on the ground are in better shape.

Specifically, the government needs to make the island safer for visitors by clearing roads, restoring electricity, opening ports and ensuring the supply of gasoline. When the damage assessment is complete, we will receive their report on how to come alongside them in rebuilding the churches, homes and lives of our brothers and sisters, as well as their communities. I assured them of our solidarity, support, prayers and love. At this time, it is vital that our churches across the country prepare for this unprecedented relief effort by making donations to One Great Hour of Sharing.

Thanks to ABHMS for taking the initiative last week concerning ABCUSA's disaster relief response to Puerto Rico's crisis.  Together, we can make a difference!
