Special Edition Newsletter - ShakeOut

The Great ShakeOut is One Week Away!
Why should you participate? Many areas of the globe are prone to earthquakes. You could be anywhere when an earthquake strikes: at home, at work, or even on vacation. Are you prepared to survive and recover quickly? Great ShakeOut earthquake drills are an opportunity to practice how to be safer during earthquakes: "Drop, Cover and Hold On."

To react quickly you must practice often. You may only have seconds to protect yourself in an earthquake before strong shaking knocks you down, or drops something on you. Practicing helps you be ready to respond.

ShakeOut Tools & Links
There are resources here that are useful for ShakeOut participants, news media, government agencies, and others to promote awareness and participation in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. Please help us grow participation and encourage preparedness via the news media, social media, and other outreach activities.
Special Messages from CUSEC ShakeOut Partners
To date, we have 1.3 million participants in the Southeast region, and we are working to move the number beyond 2 million in the next week.

If you haven't done so yet, please register your organization for the ShakeOut.  It is important for all of us to register to participate and be listed, even if the levels of participation vary from organization to organization.  You can register here
Partnership Spotlight
Southern California Earthquake Center

The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) was founded as a Science & Technology Center on February 1, 1991, with joint funding by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS). SCEC graduated from the STC Program in 2002 and has been funded as a stand-alone center under cooperative agreements with both agencies in three consecutive phases: SCEC2, 1 Feb 2002 to 31 Jan 2007; SCEC3, 1 Feb 2007 to 31 Jan 2012; and SCEC4, 1 Feb 2012 to 31 Jan 2017.

SCEC coordinates fundamental research on earthquake processes using Southern California as its principal natural laboratory. This research program is investigator-driven and supports core research and education in seismology, tectonic geodesy, earthquake geology, and computational science. The SCEC community advances earthquake system science through three basic activities: (a) gathering information from seismic and geodetic sensors, geologic field observations, and laboratory experiments; (b) synthesizing knowledge of earthquake phenomena through physics-based modeling, including system-level hazard modeling; and (c) communicating our understanding of seismic hazards to reduce earthquake risk and promote community resilience. Upcoming Events
National Disaster Resilience Conference
All NERC members are invited and encouraged to attend the 2017 National Disaster Resilience Conference (NDRC) in Atlanta where Dr. Thomas Pratt of USGS will present as part of the "Big Science" panel, and Mark Benthien will lead an earthquake breakout session.

The NDRC will bring together the latest in science, policy, and practice to create disaster-resilient communities. Leaders from FLASH Legacy Partners BASF Corporation, DHS, FEMA, Simpson Strong-Tie, State Farm Insurance Companies, and USAA along with the American Institute of Architects, AIR Worldwide, Government Accountability Office, MIT, and The Weather Channel will contribute to the dynamic program.

"We are bringing together some of the best minds in our movement at this critical time to rethink the way we approach disasters in the United States," said FLASH President and CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson. "Together, we must identify ways to overcome these extraordinary challenges and profoundly improve disaster outcomes. At the end of the conference, we will outline a statement of priorities to mitigate the deaths, injuries, and destruction unfolding all too often in communities across the country."
