Art to Soothe the Soul: Partnership Brings Art Programming to Veterans
Art with a Heart, in partnership with
The Perry Point Veterans Affairs Medical Center, has launched a six-week pilot art program for inpatient veterans. The classes, with sponsorship from
Vet Arts Connect, an initiative of
T
he Institute for Integrative Health, include pre and post testing to assess the program's impact on participants' perceived stress and attitude towards art. The pilot program's goal is to gather data to substantiate access and
opportunities to the arts for veterans
outside of the VA Center.

Impressionists: Starting An Art [with a Heart] Movement
Art with a Heart's newest movement, Impressionists, got off to a great start this summer! Launching with a happy hour in HeARTwares, Impressionists are young professionals engaging in community service, professional development and networking. Through creative social activism, the group is dedicated to supporting Art with a Heart in its mission to enhance the lives of people in need through visual art. B-More History with The Be. Organization!
Students in Art with a Heart classes at
The Be. Organization learned about the history of Baltimore's rowhomes and painted screens. Inspired by this aspect of Baltimore history and the boldly colored canvases of
Fauvist artists, students then had a great time painting their own bright and imaginative screens.

I've Got Spirit,Yes I Do! I've Got Spirit and My Buildings Do Too!
Students in Art with a Heart classes at
Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital learned about artist,
James Rizzi and his unique cityscapes that capture a world's worth of personality. Students captured plenty of personality in their buildings through the use of watercolor resist painting techniques.

Peace Be With You, Peace Camp!
During the final week of Art with a Heart's classes at
St. Francis Academy Peace Camp, students learned about the d
ynamic abolitionist and women's rights activist,
Sojourner Truth. Students then had a great time creating their own postage stamp of this determined and inspiring Peace Hero.

Metepec Moons and Hopes for a Bright Future
Art with a Heart students in the
Johns Hopkins CentroSOL summer program,
Teen Testimonios, learned about the ceramic sun and moon masks made in
Metepec, Mexico. After a period of reflection, students created paper maché sun and moon masks representing memories of their past and hopes for the future.

So Many Superheroes at Camp Open Arms!
Each summer, the University of Maryland Children's Hospital, in collaboration with University of Maryland Department of Orthopaedics and Dr. Joshua Abzug, provide children with limb challenges the chance to fully participate in summer camp at Camp Open Arms. Art with a Heart is thrilled to be an annual addition to the camp activities. Art with a Heart engaged campers in a discussion about superheroes and superpowers and then had students create their very own superheroes with recycled water bottles and rigid wrap. Each camper wrote their preferred superpower on a strip of paper that was embedded in the water bottle.

POWERful Community Collaboration
Art with a Heart had a great time working with 70 children from the
Perkins Homes community to beautify the lobby of the POWER House, operated by the Living Classrooms Foundation. The 14'x20' mixed media mural will include individual birdhouses created by each child and ceramic leaves created by hundreds of volunteers. HeARTworkers Created Beautiful Inventory While Developing Workforce Skills
The 70 students in HeARTworks, Art with a Heart's workforce development program, had a very creative, educational and productive summer. Students from
Youth Empowered Society,
Youth Opportunity Baltimore Eastside, Woodbourne Heights at
Faith Church,
TurnAround at
The Children's Home, Maryland PROMISE,
Bridges,
Mentor Maryland,
Thread, and
YouthWorks created an unprecedented amount of marketable art for display and sale in
HeARTwares! With fruit-themed mosaic lazy susans, antiqued birdhouses and funky fish sculptures, there is something for everyone!

Visitors Shopped & Bopped and the Smiles on Students' Faces Couldn't be Stopped
Shop and Bop just keeps getting bigger and better! Over 250 attendees enjoyed the fabulous sounds of Patrick and the Swayzees while shopping in HeARTwares for one-of-a-kind handmade art products by students in
Art with a Heart's summer HeARTworks program. A record 125 items were sold in four hours! One participant said seeing her artwork sell made her "feel like dancing on the moon!" Thank you to everyone who made this year's event a huge success!

With Graduation Next Month, Art of Leadership 2017 is Finishing BIG!
For the last two weeks, the leaders of the 2017 cohort have spent their afternoons working with middle school students from
Lillie May Carroll Jackson Charter School (LMCJ) to
complete
a large-scale flower mosaic and a "Habits of Mind" sign. When completed and installed, this project will truly be unique and awe-inspiring.

Meanwhile, the 2018 Art of Leadership Cohort is Just Getting Started
On August 13, 2017, the third cohort of the Art of Leadership program got started. The new cohort consists of 22
tenth
and
eleventh-grade
students from nine public and nine independent schools from around the Baltimore region. Students got to know one another through interactive icebreakers and creating community art pieces. The second half of the session was dedicated to listening to
Chris Wilson
share his impactful and inspiring life story. Of Chris Wilson's presentation, one of the students said, "
Chris Wilson was incredible. Not only was he willing to share his story but to speak about it objectively and teach us the importance of learning from our mistakes was something I won't soon forget."
