Your Monthly News & Updates
A Message From The Superintendent's Office...

Dear Falcon Community,

The beautiful fall weather is a perfect complement to the beautiful education that takes place every day throughout our schools. Our teachers, administrators and support staff, with the support of our Board of Education, engage students in learning activities that involve critical thinking, collaboration, effective communication and innovation. Inside this edition, you will see a glimpse of the many ways students are learning.

I would like to address some concerns that have been brought to my attention.  We do not have a mold issue, as that is another Monroe Township School District in Gloucester County. We still teach about Columbus discovering America, and we have had school on Columbus Day in previous years depending on when we can schedule our October in-service day.  If you are ever concerned about an issue in our schools, do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers, Principal, Dr. Alvich or me. We want the community to be informed about their schools.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

In the last issue of the Falcon Flyer, I mentioned that the Board of Education approved a resolution for a special school election to be held on March 13, 2018 from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm for the purpose of approving the construction of a new middle school on land, which is anticipated to be donated to the Board of Education by the Township of Monroe. The construction of a new middle school will address our most pressing need and help reduce our overcrowded classrooms and cafeteria, and provide better opportunities for students to have access to extra-curricular activities. This project is of extreme importance to the students and families of Monroe Township and it is the first step in addressing our overcrowded schools. It is extremely important that we inform the community about the referendum and the importance of the referendum being approved. If you are available and can volunteer time to speak to your neighbors about the referendum, we can use your help. Please email Cathy Varacallo at [email protected] or call her at (732) 521-1500 x 5224 to help us with this important initiative. You can also contact the PTO/A in your child's school. The PTO/A is helping us with this project, as they do with so many other projects. We are looking for approximately 80-100 people.

School Activities

A Technology Exposition will be held on November 14, 2017 at MTHS beginning at 6:00 pm. The Expo will include different sessions with a maximum of 150 people for each session. The purpose of the Expo is to provide students, parents, MTSD staff and community members with an opportunity to preview the newest technology devices by companies, such as Apple, Dell, Microsoft and others, to be considered for our one to one technology integration program at MTHS. Please visit our District website ( www.monroe.k12.nj.us ) to register for this event. Once you register, you will receive an e-ticket with the time of your session.

High school students who participated in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center will be presenting their business plans to a group of judges at MTHS on Tuesday, October 17th from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The business plan presentation is the culminating activity for these students, who worked with high school teachers and a college professor from the Graduate School of William and Mary University to focus on the issues faced by entrepreneurs of enterprise, while exploring the process of leadership, managing, financing, communicating and marketing. All are welcome to attend.

Yours in Education,

Michael Kozak

BROOKSIDE NEWS

What's Happening in Brookside and Barclay Brook !?
During the month of September, the Brookside and Barclay Brook staff, families, and PTA came together for an amazing cause: supporting fellow citizens.  Through this community project, students were able to examine a current event, delve deeper into the four themes of Social Studies as contained in the Social Studies curriculum, and practice their letter-writing skills. Together, both schools partnered in order to send backpacks filled with school supplies to the students of Texas, who were struggling to get their schools cleared from the mess left behind by Hurricane Harvey.  The BBBS PTA, along with teachers Kristen Miller, Theresa Anthony, Jodi Rubenstein and Victoria DeCarlo, organized a classroom drive in which classrooms from both schools were nominated to bring in specific supplies.  Within days, donations came pouring in from every direction!  Students stuffed backpacks with pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, erasers, books, scissors, socks, toiletries, and personal letters offering an upbeat note from a "far away friend". Not only did the PTA help organize the drive, but they generously donated over 60 backpacks and hundreds of book socks to greatly help further our cause.  It truly was a tremendous group effort that resulted in the donation of 251 backpacks to children in need!  A huge thanks to all that helped to make this project a success for our students, as well as the students in Texas.

Brookside School's Empty Bowl Project
This project took place in the spring of 2017 but was a yearlong project.  Our fifth grade students learned about hunger awareness in the United States and other countries, made clay bowls, worked with our senior community and our middle school and high school students/staff.  Brookside School's Empty Bowl Project delivers 100% of money raised and food collected to families, children, and seniors through five local food pantries. To that end, Brookside School raised over $4,000 for the local food pantries.  This would not have been such a success without the support of our staff, students, senior community, and our PTA. A special thank you goes out to our parents who support their children and our Empty Bowl Event.   Thank you very much for making Empty Bowls 2017 a huge success!

This card can be used at places such as Modell's, TGIF, Chili's, etc. from Old Bridge to Howell. There are many local places in Jamesburg and Monroe such as Baker's American Grill, Bagel Bazaar, Vine, Bella Italia, Tuscany, etc. Please check our website for more information on places the card can be used.  If you don't have a child in the Middle School, and would like to purchase a card to support the MTMS PTO, please email  [email protected]

Our fundraising efforts bring so many great events/activities for our students and staff.  In addition to all that we fund each year (dances, bingos, etc.) for our students and staff, one of our fundraising initiatives is to purchase and enhance the MTMS Gymnasium Speaker System. 5
th Grade Teachers at Applegarth Elementary School

At Applegarth Elementary School, we don't ask "how smart are you?" but "HOW ARE YOU SMART?"  During the first few weeks of school, 5 th grade teachers led their students through a tutorial of Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences whereby students were able to discover their optimal strengths of learning and performing.  To introduce the activity, students read and sorted scenario cards about the eight multiple intelligences (People, Body, Music, Picture, Word, Logic, Self, and Nature Smart).  Students then answered a questionnaire about their schoolwork and hobby preferences.  With teacher guidance, students took this data and plotted the information onto a mind map. The final piece of this activity was for each student to create a visual model of his/her brain with color pipe cleaners (each color representing a different type of "Smart").

This fun and engaging lesson opens students' eyes to the many ways they can excel.  In addition, teachers use this data to tailor instruction and activities to meet the needs of all learners.

Hearts for Texas at Oak Tree School

As the people of Texas attempt to recover and move forward from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, Oak Tree School wanted to do something, even if it was offering a few words of inspiration.  Third grade teacher Nancy Hanlon reached out to Sue Creech Elementary School in Katy, Texas.  While they no longer needed school supplies, as they had been relocated, they would never tire of words and pictures for encouragement and hope.  So Oak Tree classes joined together to create "Hearts for Texas".
Mrs. Hanlon and Ms. Kohlhepp spearheaded this campaign in which heartfelt words of support are being shipped off to the Lone Star State.

But Oak Tree's efforts did not stop there.  With the retirement of veteran first grade teacher  Mrs. Dianne Ostroski, there were many books and school supplies that had not found a home when she emptied her classroom.  Third Grade teacher Kim Synarski knew of a Houston native who was driving south to deliver much needed items to her hometown.  So boxes were packed and cars were loaded by Ms. Synarski and Grade 2 teacher Mrs. Christina Sceusa and valuable school supplies were delivered to the Herrera Elementary School in Texas.

There is no doubt that Oak Tree continues to have a big heart for helping others.
