World Pneumonia Day falls annually on November 12th, bringing together advocates, donors, partners, and audiences from around the world.
This year's theme is "
Stop Pneumonia: Invest in Child Health," making the case that we must invest in pneumonia prevention, treatment, and innovation to promote child health. This year, World Pneumonia Day activities will take place throughout the month to spotlight partner activities around the world, including events put on by National Geographic, the Gates Foundation, UNICEF, and more. Global Handwashing Day 2017: "Our Hands, Our Future"
Handwashing with soap can saves lives by reducing exposure to pathogens that cause diarrhea and upper respiratory infections, like pneumonia. Mark your calendars for the upcoming
Global Handwashing Day on October 15th. The day is dedicated to increasing awareness and efforts to address hand-washing with soap as an effective and affordable way to stop the spread of diseases, and save lives. This year's theme is "Our Hands, Our Future."
On September 13th, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation released a new report,
Goalkeepers: The Stories Behind the Data
, in advance of the
UN General Assembly
. The report uses data projections from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington to forecast better and worse future scenarios for 18 indicators of the Global Goals, including child and maternal mortality, HIV/AIDS, stunting, family planning and access to financial services. The foundation also hosted an event featuring speakers including
President Obama, Bill and Melinda Gates, and Malala Yousafzai.
One announcement at the Goalkeepers 2017 event was The Gates Foundation's $200 million commitment towards replenishing the trust fund supporting the Global Financing Facility, which advances the work of the U.N. Global Strategy for Women, Adolescents, and Children.

ROTASIIL Clinical Trial Results
September 26,2017 -
Results from a phase 3 efficacy study from Serum Institute of India Pvt. Ltd.'s rotavirus vaccine BRV-PV (known as ROTASIIL) were released. The study found the vaccine to be safe, well-tolerated, and had significant efficacy against the disease in infants that lasted through 2 years of age.
The results from this

in India are promising. In countries where they are used routinely, rotavirus vaccines have played a significant role in reducing death and hospitalization from the disease. India accounts for more than 20% of the world's rotavirus mortality burden. To address this, India began a phased introduction of
an indigenous rotavirus vaccine
product
(ROTAVAC) in 2016; this vaccine has now been rolled out in nine states. The development of this new
heat-stable vaccine
product (ROTASIIL) in India has the potential to increase global vaccine supply, lower costs, and reduce the pressure on
already burdened cold chain storage - all meaning they can reach even more children in India and other countries.
Impact of Pneumococcal Vaccination on Pneumonia Hospitalizations and Related Costs in Ontario: A Population-Based Ecological Study
A new study from Clinical Infectious Diseases evaluated the population-level impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) on pneumonia hospitalizations and related costs. The study found that the PCV immunization program reduced pneumonia hospitalizations and hospitalization related costs significantly in both the vaccine-eligible age group and PCV-ineligible older children and elderly.
