President's Message:

Oh my gosh...what a year so far!   And it is going by so fast, I just wish there was another day in the week!

Since our last issue, we sponsored the wonderful Tails for Life fundraiser. We raised enough funds to help subsidize another service pup. But the BEST part of the evening was witnessing Cody's graduation from his service dog training program. Read about it below. Being part of these success stories is what keeps us all motivated to do more.

Another exciting first is our upcoming Parent to Parent Workshop. Topics for this workshop are Residential and Employment, two subjects near and dear to our hearts if we are parents.

And don't forget...October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. Lots of organizations and companies have Disability Awareness programs. Check to see if your company participates and how you might benefit.

Warm Regards,

Mary Anne Ehlert,
President & Founder

Tails for Life - Fundraiser Update

The "Wine for Wags" Fundraiser to benefit Tails for Life was a great success! If you were able to attend Thank You.  The evening was great fun for all, including the pups in training!

Cody graduated! Cody is a 2 year old Cream Golden Retriever, who had completed his training and is now a Certified Autism Service Dog.

Cody began his training at Tails for Life at the age of 2 months. At 4 months he meet with his new owner for the first time.

He went home with his forever family that night.

There are many families, like the one Cody belongs to now, that are in need of trained service dogs. The cost of raising and training a Service Dog at Tails for Life is approximately $25,000. This training can take up to 2 years. Each family seeking a service dog is asked to contribute half of the total cost. Many families struggle to raise these funds. If you would still like to donate please go to the Tails for Life website at www.tailsforlifefdl.org

We would like to thank all the sponsors from the
fundraiser including:

College and Preparing for the Job Market -

We've written and given you articles about college options in the past. Here are a couple great articles that focus on being in college and what and how to prepare for the job market...

Developmentally Disabled, and Going to College -
New York Times  August 2017

"The students - about 60 are expected this fall - have various degrees of disability, often with related developmental disorders. One communicates through a picture board and an iPad; a helper supports her arm as she taps out words. Another, a movie buff who wrote a play for his theater class, has Asperger's syndrome. A sports enthusiast who interned this past spring with the Syracuse Orange men's basketball team has Down syndrome.

During the first three years, the students choose "majors" and audit five to six college classes that align with their interests. They complete homework and take tests, ungraded, with the help of note takers, who are supplied by the university to sit with them in class. Popular majors: disability studies, sport management and food studies."                  Read the Full Article Here

Along the Autism Spectrum, a Path Through Campus Life
New York Times  November 2016

"The first generation of college students with an autism diagnosis is fanning out to campuses across the country. These growing numbers reflect the sharp rise in diagnosis rates since the 1990s, as well as the success of early-learning interventions and efforts to include these students in mainstream activities."                                                     Read the Full Article Here

Speaking of Jobs...

October is National Disability Education Awareness Month.  Readers Digest had a breif article in the October 2017 Issue spotlighting October 18,  as Disability Mentoring Day.  People with autism and other disabilities can make a special appointment to try out a new job.  This began as a White House initiative in 1999, to match businesses with disabled people looking for work.

AAPD has a great website about taking part in Disability Mentoring Day
