October 15, 2017: United Nations Sunday: Loving the World
Rev. Joy Atkinson

There is much in today's world that is heartbreaking and worrisome. But there are glimmers of hope in many places, one of which is in the ongoing work and special projects of the United Nations. The sermon will explore how United Nations programs help to carry out some of the values that we Unitarian Universalists hold dear, and that we share with those who would build world community.

Words of Joy
We have witnessed several natural disasters recently, now including the raging fires that have devastated regions just north of UUCM this week, as well as the tragic massacre at a concert in Las Vegas last week. It has been a very challenging Fall season, and our hearts have felt again and again the ache of concern for those who have lost their lives or have lost people close to them, and those whose homes have been destroyed. Many in our congregation have helped in various ways, sending donations through the UUA/UU Service  Committee to areas far from us that have been devastated by hurricanes, helping in person as needed in shelters housing evacuees from the fires close to home. Many more have asked how they can help. I am heartened by all the expressions of care and concern I have heard from UUCM members.
Regarding the fires: As of now (Tuesday) here are two ways you can help. The Red Cross is accepting cash donations. https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation   Also, you can can visit the Center  for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership's website at https://cvnl.org/volunteerism/  to register as a disaster service worker. We will keep you informed as we learn about more ways to help.

Your expressions of love and concern are heart-filling. May you be safe.
Joy

Dear UUCM,
Even as we all respond to the nearby firestorm with aid, action, or prayers, we see the fragility of our place on the planet. With gratitude for what we have, we can give our time, talent and treasures to the communities of which we are a part. There are so many ways to respond.

Here are some things UUCM RE is doing:
  • Early response and outreach to coordinate volunteer efforts among UUCM families to the firestorm.

  • Ramping up the RE class Giving Baskets to collect for local and Puerto Rican aid. (Red Cross and UUSC)

  • YRUU class discussing methane effects on our atmosphere and a "NO Beef" challenge.

  • Book Drive by the elementary grade classes. Bring your books this Sunday. Last day of collection Sunday October 15th.
YRUU Conference this weekend in Redwood City: As part of the planning team for this first new PCD YRUU retreat organization, we are sending five people to this weekend retreat starting Friday the 13th. Attending are Isaac Trumbull Stearns, Julia Musgrove, Wil Bauer, Jef Melcher and George Pegelow.

Stone Soup 2017:  Save the Date: November 19th. We anticipate another great rendition by the YRUU this year. Families with children ages 6-18 will all have parts to play in the production. Set up and decoration starts at 9 AM.

Rev. Joy will be offering an Adult Education class this fall on the American Transcendentalists, a small group of Nineteenth Century characters who were very influential in the shaping of the American character, as well as American literature and philosophy. They are also a important part of our Unitarian and Universalist history.

We will read original works by R.W. Emerson, H.D. Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, Bronson Alcott, Elizabeth Peabody and others. The class will meet for five Sundays,  1-3:00 PM : October 15, 22, 29 and November 5 and 19. Call the UUCM office 415 479-4131 or contact Rev. Joy to sign up.
Remarkable People!  Friday, October 20, 7:30 pm
MORE Remarkable People!  Friday, October 20, 7:30 pm in the Fireside Room.

Come learn more from our local pie-meister librarian and an activist acupuncturist.
Henry Bankhead and Ilana Trumbull-Stearns will be talking about their remarkable lives.

The Remarkable People evenings give us a chance to learn from the life stories within our own community.  There are always some interesting new facts, even from old friends, and sometimes some surprising life intersections you might never have known about without hearing each others' narrative of where they have been before being with us.  Come learn more in a a relaxed setting with refreshments and conversation.
Dinners for Eight starts November 4
Dinners for Eight is an organized potluck.  It is a wonderful way to socialize with UUCM members in their homes 'breaking bread'.  We get to know others in a casual setting and have more in depth conversations than large UUCM dinners.

We meet the first Saturday of the month except January and usually have dinners until April or May.  A host volunteers their house and provides the main course.  Other attendees bring appetizers, salads or vegetables, wine, and dessert.  Food assignments are usually done on a first to be contacted.  Dinners usually start at 6:30 or 7:00. Individuals are welcome and if your house isn't large enough to host you can co-host with another member. Sher Sheldon arranges the dinner attendees. If you have not already signed up and want to be involved, contact her at 415-892-1727.
