September 29, 2017

Anyone can keep updated on the impact of the 2017-19 WI Biennial Budget on teacher licensing by watching to DPI's blog:  https://dpi.wi.gov/tepdl/news

With the signing of the budget on September 21, 2017:

  • All Professional and Master educators' teaching licenses automatically transform into life licenses. Nothing needs to be done, the DPI is working on computer database fixes that will show no expiration dates on teacher licenses. Professional and Master educators who have been working on credits or PDPs to renew their licenses can STOP.

  • All initial educators will be issued a Provisional license. In order for those licenses to be converted into life licenses, teachers will need to complete 6 semesters of "successful" teaching. Presumably, Educator Effectiveness will be used as a measure for "successful," and, if you are currently working on a PDP for your initial license, you can STOP.

  • At this point, teachers do not need to do anything to apply for either life or provisional licenses!

The DPI is currently working on all the details and has until January 2018 to complete the rule process. Here are some things that are still in question:
  • Are PDPs still available for professional development?
  • Will any of the semesters before September 2017 count toward the 6 successful semesters needed to convert a Provisional license into a life license?

Stay tuned.
We'll keep you posted!
