Lovejoy HS News 10 10 17

P arents and Guardians,

It's Homecoming Week at LHS, and kids are set to have a fun and busy four days of school. Along with each of our themed dress-up days for the week, students will have their annual Powder Puff and Mr. Lovejoy competitions on Thursday (details below). On Friday, the festivities continue as students will have the opportunity to wear their Homecoming Mum to school. We know these kinds of events are what students remember after they graduate and are excited for this week!

A few other important things happening this week are PSAT testing tomorrow, and the end of the 1st Grading Period on Friday. All 9th -11th grade students will report to their assigned rooms to take the PSAT test at 8:45 a.m. tomorrow, and they are typically finished around 12:30 p.m. Please have your student bring a couple of sharpened #2 pencils and a calculator for the test.

Please take a few minutes to review the information below about important dates and events.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Hurricane Maria Relief
A message from Enrique Vega, Lovejoy High School Senior:

"My name is Enrique Vega. I am a Senior at Lovejoy High School and have decided to help victims affected by Hurricane Maria. On September 20th, 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by a Category 4 hurricane. This powerful hurricane has left millions without power, little access to water, dwindling food supplies, and no place to call home. I have partnered up with the Salvation Army to collect items to help relieve some of the stress put onto the US territory of Puerto Rico. Some of the most essential items needed include food, water, hygiene supplies, and baby supplies. Large donation boxes will be located at the front of Lovejoy High School from October 10th - 13th. There will also be donation boxes at all entrances to the Homecoming pep rally and the Homecoming game. Please help those affected by this tragedy by donating items."

Supporting LHS Students through Senior Project Judging
It is difficult to believe how quickly the school year is flying by. At the high school, this means that some LHS Seniors are nearing the time for their Senior Project Presentations.

Senior Project is an exciting part of every LHS senior's experience as they explore topics of their choice and share what they learn with members of the community. There are different components of the project including creating a proposal, writing an annotated bibliography, and completing an activity. As the culminating event of their Senior Project, students give an 8-10 minute presentation about their experience to a panel of adult volunteer judges. These judges score students on their presentation skills and give them feedback designed to help them in their future pursuits.

We want to extend to you the invitation to share in this experience as a Senior Project Judge. Presentations will take place at Lovejoy High School on November 14th, December 6th, January 18th, February 16th and March 7th. Presentations begin at 6:30 p.m. and should conclude by 8:30 p.m. at the latest. Judges training begins at 5:30 p.m. for those who have never judged Senior Project presentations. Those who judged in past years may arrive at 6 p.m. A light meal is served each night.

Senior Project 5K - Running Over Depression
This year for their senior projects, Bradley Davis, James Ayers, and Jonah Barton will be organizing the 2nd Annual Running Over Depression 5K and 1K event. Last year, the run had over 360 participants and raised over $8,000 to donate to AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). This year, they want to improve on those numbers, and would love to get more involvement from the Lovejoy Community. The event is on Saturday, November 11th. Costs to race are $20 for the 1K and $30 for the 5K with all proceeds being donated to AFSP. Sign up at Running Over Depression 5K & 1K Fun Run registration information . Be sure to register early, as prices jump after November 3rd."

LHS Golf
Our varsity boys recently took on Tanglewood Resort and Golf Club in the Denison High School Stinger Classic. This was the first tournament of the year for the guys, and they played well enough to bring home the win. The Leopards shot a team total, 332 for 1st place, Pottsboro shot 334, and Plano East shot 337. Leading the Leopards was Freshman Jay Pabin. In his first high school tournament he finished 3rd individually, shooting a 77. He started a bit nervously going 6 over after his first 7 holes. He settled down nicely to play his last 11 holes in 1 under par. Senior Will Fairchild shot 83 in his first Lovejoy High School tournament. Senior Jonah Barton shot 85, Junior Matthew Welch shot 87, Senior Weston Ludlow shot 90, and Junior Brian Wolfe shot 91.

Families who wish to apply for free or reduced priced meals need to complete a new income application every school year. PTA Reflections: Within Reach
The National PTA Reflections program encourages students of all ages and abilities to explore and be involved in the arts. Through the program, National PTA, Lovejoy High School PTA, and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works.  This years' contest theme is "Within Reach".  We hope all Leopards will submit an entry in one or more of the following categories: Dance Choreography, Literature, Film Production, Photography, Visual Arts, and Music Composition.  For rules and entry forms  click here .  The deadline is Friday, October 27th.

Eagle Project:  Hurricane Harvey Relief
A message from Hunter Kight, WSMS 8th grader:

"My name is Hunter Kight, I am an 8th grader at Willow Springs, and I've just started my eagle project. I have chosen to help the Hurricane Harvey victims for my project. Many of the victims did not have flood insurance and this looks to be the most costly natural disaster in U.S. history. The clean-up and rebuild effort will take more than a year. There is a time during disasters like this that charities experience donor fatigue. This is where donations drop to their lowest. Through my project I am trying to reduce donor fatigue, by collecting basic essential items. I have partnered with the Salvation Army to collect supplies like canned goods, baby food/formula, hygiene items, diapers and cases of water. Large donation boxes are located at each school to collect these items. I will leave these boxes out until November 3, 2017. Please consider supporting this effort by filling the boxes and helping the victims."
