As a prolific young scholar of the Enlightenment,
Erasmus
was the most important representative of his time of humanism in Northern Europe. Early in the Reformation many saw Martin Luther as another Erasmus. But while Luther was a man of vocation and committed to his duty to teach the Word of God, Erasmus was a man of freedom and independence, who was released from his monastic vows by the pope. Erasmus' influence waned, as Luther became more popular.

The October Sermon Series at St. Paul is called
"Sola: What Matters Most." During this five-week series, we'll look at how everything we are as Christians centers around Christ alone, who saves us by grace alone, which we receive through faith alone, which we know because of Scripture alone. This reality leads us to live to God's glory alone!

Slavery
I will not be enslaved by anything. -1 Corinthians 6:12
Slavery is something we all believe is wrong, yet there is more slavery in the world today than ever before. We often think of slavery as one person being controlled by another person. So the question is, are you a slave? Maybe your quick answer is no. But look at the question again. Is there something that is controlling you? Paul made sure that no sin enslaved him. Are you enslaved by a sinful behavior or attitude in your life? Ask the Lord for the strength that you need to break the bonds of whatever is enslaving you. Jesus forgives you and sets you free from the "slavery" of sin. Knowing that you are set free, join with St Paul in saying: "I am no longer a slave, I am set free and will not be enslaved by anything."
