October and November are the last Sundays of Pentecost, which turn into the Last Sundays of the church year.
With all the natural disasters and upheaval in our world, people are concerned about the end times.
God speaks very clearly in his word about the end times.
He talks about natural disasters as the beginning of these times.
He warns of a time when Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead.
He will destroy the heavens and earth and create a new heaven and new earth.
Matthew 24:35 "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away."
The church every year looks at the promises of God.
He will destroy the wicked and deliver those who remain faithful.
I say all this because there is much hand-wringing, weeping and gnashing of teeth as we are bombarded by news of the latest disaster or political debacle. Followers of Christ have faced persecution since the first century for proclaiming their faith. History records dark and difficult times of disaster and persecution. Many of Jesus contemporaries thought that the world would end with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. The spread of the Ottoman Turks was thought to be a clear sign of the end of time. The protestant reformer identified the Pope as the antichrist and an agent to usher in the end of times. In our era, it is popular to identify sitting political leaders as antichrists and agents used by the evil one to usher in the destruction of the world.
What I learn from Scripture is that the end of times will happen by the hand of God. He is still in control of his creation and his creatures. I would encourage you to attend worship in the coming months as we look at how God will protect and deliver his children from the coming judgement. We are those who cling to the eternal word of God and have hope. We do not despair because we are victorious in Christ.
During the month of October, we will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. I would encourage you to learn about this world changing event in history. Many Roman Catholics believed that the heretic Luther and his followers should be destroyed to protect God's church. I have always thought that God could take care of his own Church, especially when we are faithful to his eternal word. The Lutheran Reformation gives witness to this truth.
Mark your calendar for the October 21st Reformation celebration. This Saturday should be a fun day when we can celebrate that we are God's chosen and redeemed children by grace alone. There are many reasons to study our history and learn from the past. It is important we know and study who we are as Lutherans. As we face the end of times, Paul's warning to Timothy should remind us that all we do should be based on the eternal Word of God. "For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths." (2 Timothy 4:3-4) A church based on the foundation of the Word of God is who we are as Lutherans.
Please with all the signs of the end times it is important that we are prepared for disasters. The Lutheran Early Response Team training is one way we can prepare to respond to natural disasters. There will initial training in Paola at First Lutheran Church on November 4th. The cost of this training will be $25. If you are interested in attending let Pastor Keltner know. The most important thing you should always remember is: Those who remain faithful will be saved. Challenging times are filled with opportunities for you to share the reason for the hope you have. You are victorious in Christ.

Christ Our Savior's Reformation Celebration
Christ Our Savior will celebrate 500 years since the Lutheran Reformation with fun, food and fellowship. Join us at church on Saturday October 21, 2017 at 4:00 pm for games and activities. Adults and children are welcome - we will have something for everyone! Prizes will be awarded!
We would like to know if you will attend the Celebration so that we can have plenty of food and prizes for all ages. Please email me at [email protected] with your family name, number of adults, and number & age of the children who will attend. Or, you may fill out a gold colored card found at the entry to the sanctuary and drop it in the collection plate during a service.
We have some other fun things planned for the Celebration - door prizes, a special gift from the You'th, a possible visit from Luther himself, and more.............
Dinner will be buffet style in the Community Center building beginning at 5:00 pm. We appreciate all of the volunteers that have agreed to make German-style food. Christine Fauss is heading up the food and beverage activities. Below is a list of German dishes and recipes that she has researched for volunteers to make or buy and bring. (Some items can be store-bought - we do not expect you to make your own sauerkraut or jelly stuffed donuts!) Some have already been claimed and the names are listed beside the item.
Call Christine directly at 913-645-4003 if you want to prepare or buy and bring a German-style dish from the list, or if you have a German dish that you would like to make and provide. Leave a message if she is unavailable and she will get back to you.

Finally, we will need help with set up and clean up. Set up will include setting up tables and chairs. Financial News
We are getting closer to paying off the cost of the water damage and repair to our building. Watch the chart in the Narthex as we make our way to the final payment for the clean-up and repair work. The total cost for the two water damage events was $22,000. We are within $3000 of that amount as of the publication date for the newsletter - thanks to lots of generous donors - no amount is too small to help. Cards for a Cause brought in approximately $400 to help pay down the debt. Thank you to Annastasia Muckenthaler for organizing and executing this fundraiser.

Thank you again to all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly on cleanup, shampooing carpet, painting, and setting the basement up after the work was done. We were very thankful to Quality Home Improvement and Rich Walania for stepping in so quickly with fans, air purifiers, water vacs and workers to accomplish the cleanup and repairs so quickly.
In other financial news we are on budget with other expenses. We have drafted a budget for 2018 that is slightly higher than the current budget for 2017 due to anticipated increases in some of our fixed expenses such as utilities, insurance, maintenance and office expenses. This budget is available to anyone who would like to read over it and provide input. The budget will be presented at the Voters Meeting on December 3, 2017 at 11:30 am for final approval.
You may attend the October or November Church Council meetings if you have feedback or input into the budget or to be more informed about what the church is doing.

Help us raise money for our Youth Group!
It's easy, just save labels for cash. Just save the labels of Best Choice products. Be sure to save the UPC portion (proof of purchase). Our youth group will earn $30 in cash for each bundle of 1,000 UPC's sent in. So far we have only 400 UPC codes. We will have a box in the narthex to begin collecting the labels within the next few weeks. So please keep your eyes open for the label box and help us raise some funds!
