A new name for SASS
About a year ago, we told you that we were changing our  name to better describe what we do. After extensive deliberation, we've got a winner! We'll announce it in mid-November, so stay tuned.

SASS Conversation Club hits another home run
Last month, SASS hosted the second meeting of its Conversation Club. Miraculously, about half of the 50 attendees were students; the other half were native speakers.
SASS student Johanna Diaz said this about the event: "Most of us speak our native language all of the time. At Conversation Club, we meet a lot of people and have time to practice English."
And SASS tutor Kate Hand said this: "I wish you did this every month. It's a great way to be human."

Jose Reyes: First SASS student to attend Skyline College
Since coming to the U.S. from Mexico twenty years ago, Jose Reyes has been an "on and off ESL student" at South San Francisco Adult School. But when he took adult school classes this year, it was different - that's when he learned he could go to college.
Jose, 36, attributes his decision to attend college to transition navigators - special advisors at South San Francisco Adult School and Skyline College who help students transition from adult school to college.
Jose, one of two SASS students who started attending Skyline College this semester, is part of a new SASS initiative to provide services to transitioning students throughout San Mateo County.
Jose currently works full-time as a cashier at a gas station and plans to pursue a degree in business administration. SASS pays for his textbooks and parking pass.
One of Jose's favorite aspects of college is learning "college" words, like essential. Then he adds, "To get a certificate or degree, it is essential that you do your homework." He says
an added benefit of college is that he's better able to help his kids with their homework, and also can teach them a new word or two.

This semester, SASS is making college a reality for more than 200 students who never considered it a possibility.
