Author Events

Hello dear educator,
We have a great fall full of books and authors planned and I want to personally invite you to attend any or all of the events.

In conjunction with two ACLU chapters we are proud to present Laura Atkins and Stan Yogi, authors of
Fred Korematsu defied the government's WWII orders that all Japanese Americans leave the west coast to be incarcerated. The ACLU of Northern California represented Korematsu all the way to the Supreme Court.

We are so pleased to introduce you to Carmen Bogan, author of
Rodney is that kid who just can't sit still. He's inside, but he wants to be outside. Outside is where Rodney always wants to be. Between school and home, there is a park... When Rodney finally gets a chance to go to a real park, with plenty of room to run and climb and shout, and to just be himself, he will never be the same.
Illustrated by Floyd Cooper, it's a great story of widening your horizons.  We will serve tea and would love for you to suggest other titles that help kids see beyond their surroundings.

I'm so pleased to get to host Denise Doyen in support of her new book The Pomegranate Witch.
I loved her previous book Once Upon a Twice and was delighted that it was chosen as an EB White Read Aloud Honor title in 2010.
When a scary old tree blooms with the most beautiful pomegranates ever seen, the neighborhood kids' mouths water with anticipation. But the tree isn't theirs-and it has a protector!  Illustrated by Eliza Wheeler and told in clever rhymes, it's another that I want to read out loud to everyone.

Michael Genhart Ph.D is launching several new books and we want to get them into your hands.
Cake & I Scream... Being Bossy Isn't Sweet
Mac & Geeeeez... Being Real Is What It's All About
Peanut Butter & Jealyous... Sometimes Friendship Gets Sticky
Those three are going to be great in a classroom or library setting for teaching tough concepts.
I See You is a wordless picture book that depicts a homeless woman who is not seen by everyone around her--except for a little boy.
So Many Smarts  teaches kids that there is more than one way to be smart. It encourages readers to look at their own combination of brain power and skills to determine how they might learn best, excel, and be themselves.
So you see, Michael has created books that will be really useful for educators and parents. We'd love to see you here to meet him and perhaps talk about books that you like to use to tackle issues.

Gayle Pitman will be here with her new book
Feminism From A to Z
This is an alphabetical primer on feminism for teen girls. The chapters take a look at the history and current events through the lens of feminist theory and introduce an inclusive and wide range of feminist thoughts and perspectives.

A surprise hit of the fall is Mossby's Magic Carpet Handbook!
Ilona Bray, author and representative for the fictional Mossby's company has created a fanciful 'handbook' that looks at the science, geography, cultures, and much more involved in using a magic carpet to travel on.
What do you see when you fly over head? If you land in a strange land, what will you see? How does your body change at altitude? And what if you fall off? It's a great (and sneaky) way to fold many science lessons into a fanciful imagination exercise! Please join us to meet Ilona and I highly encourage you to tell kids to attend. She puts on quite a show.

On his journey, he encounters a rich world full of animals with vibrant spots, dazzling points, and other mesmerizing patterns.
