Overwhelmed lately? You're Not Alone
I'm not sure what it was about last week. It seemed so many people I know were feeling overwhelmed. Many individuals I encountered throughout the week said the recent seven-day stretch had been particularly stressful and exhausting. I was part of that group experiencing the same emotions, too.

It's easy to feel that way sometimes. We get bombarded with extra work, we have friends, family, and co-workers who count on us to get things done, and we have a calendar that is often overbooked. Family members get sick, an unexpected bill puts a wrench in your budget and you still haven't tackled the laundry.

So, what do you do when you're overwhelmed? Do you feel like shutting down? Do you push through and work harder? Everyone is different in how they deal with it but there are a few things I consider when I'm overwhelmed.

First, I take a step back and look at the big picture. I try to prioritize. I might ask for extra time on other deadlines so that I can wrap up a larger project. I seek help. This is, by far, the most difficult one for me but I'm getting slightly better with it as I age. But most importantly, I ask God to help me trust in Him. He provides wisdom, letting us know which battles are important, the right moment that we should step in, and when we need to sit back and relax.

So, while you might feel like crawling back into bed to avoid the day, remember the prayer David wrote while hiding from Saul in a cave.

"When my spirit faints within me, you know my way! In the path where I walk they have hidden a trap for me." - Psalm 142:3

"Numbers Update"
We are beginning the school year with 325 students, which is up 7 from the start of last year. There are 82 freshmen, 76 sophomores, 75 juniors, and 92 seniors. Nearly every new family we meet reports they are considering Valley Lutheran because of what you have said about our school. Thank you.

Advanced Placement Test Scores are a good indicator of quality teachers and students. Last spring 70 of our students took 105 Advanced Placement Tests and earned "passing" scores on 84 percent of the tests.  This compares very favorable to 64 percent "passing" scores statewide. Passing scores usually result in college credit. We offer Advanced Placement Classes in Spanish, Calculus, English Literature, English Language, Biology, and U.S. History.

UPCOMING SAT & ACT EXAMS
It is a common trend for students to take the SAT or ACT multiple times before applying to college. Colleges will accept either exam score and will typically take the highest score earned, regardless of the test date. If your student is going to be applying this year, it might be a good idea to take the SAT or ACT early this fall.
