CPS Weekly Update

From Upper School Principal Mrs. Ruth Heilman

Put down your phone, turn off the TV, and eat!

How often do you eat together as a family? Nothing fancy, just dinner around the kitchen table with the kids. We have busy lives, filled with work, sports, rehearsals, and homework. Is there even time to sit down together for a meal? Researchers tell us to find it. For young children, dinnertime conversation boosts vocabulary even more than when parents read aloud to their children. For older children, family mealtime is a better predictor of high achievement than test scores or participating in extra-curricular activities. Adolescents who eat family meals five to seven times a week are twice as likely to get A’s in school as those who do not. Anxiety and stress are reduced, as are high-risk teenage behaviors. Children grow into healthier young adults with better conflict resolution skills, and they have a more positive view of the future than children who don’t eat meals with family.

The special thing about mealtime isn’t really the food. It is the “ministry of presence.” Setting the table, cooking, talking about the day, and even silly “dad jokes” create memories and stronger families. Ministry of presence simply means being there for one another. God gives us the best example of this. He says, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Joshua 1:5b NIV). God sent Jesus to be present in the flesh, and to take our sins to the cross. Through the Holy Spirit, God makes us part of His family in baptism. Jesus says, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28: 20b NIV). As a Christian school, Concordia Prep School strives to be there for the members of our community, in all of the good and bad times. God bless and keep you!
Concordia Prep Choirs to Perform at Calvary Lutheran Church
The Concordia Prep Choirs, under the direction of Ms. Lauren Staehr, will perform on Sunday, October 15 at 10 am for a Special Choral Sunday performance, in memory of Richard (Dick) Heilman, long-time teacher and choir director at BLHS/BLS and a member of the Calvary Lutheran congregation. For the past two years, under the direction of Art Teacher Mrs. Marcie Barth, Advanced Studio art students have participated in The Memory Project creating portraits for children living in impoverished and war torn countries. The Art Department has created portraits of students in Madagascar, Bolivia, and the Congo. They are now working on portraits of Syrian refugee children.

From the School Nurse
If a student is ill with a fever, they should not return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication(i.e.Tylenol, Advil). This will help ensure the student is no longer contagious.

According to our school policy, students should not have any medications(including over the counter medications) in their locker or bag other than emergency medications such inhalers or EpiPen that have been ordered by their physician.  The Over the Counter Medication Authorization Form was developed to allow parents and the student's doctor to indicate what medications the student can take from the nurse during the school day. These medication are all kept in the health suite and administered by the school nurse. The form is available on the website or from the nurse. Please contact Ellen Marquardt if you have any questions.

Art Club Operation Christmas Child Project
The Art Club is starting the Operation Christmas Child project. We will be packing shoe boxes with gifts and supplies to send to children living in poverty around the world. A gospel booklet is included. This is a wonderful opportunity for all of us to participate in the great commission to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the nations. Students are asked to bring in a shoebox and each week from now through November different items will be collected. Donations can be given to Mrs. Barth in room 105.
