Dress Code Update
Several concerned parents asked Ashwood's faculty  to review the dress code, with a particular look at the policy concerning leggings. After a great deal of research, consideration, and reports from meetings with parents, the faculty has decided to change the current policy and allow leggings to be worn at school. The primary reason for this change is that styles have changed dramatically in recent years, and it has become increasingly difficult to define the differences between leggings, tights, jeggings, yoga pants, etc. In recognition of the strong feelings and changing perceptions about leggings, the faculty has agreed to shift school policy on this subject. Leggings may be worn as pants so long as they are not so tight as to impede movement. Teachers reserve the right to determine what is appropriate.
Reviewing policies concerning students carefully and regularly is the business of the weekly faculty meeting. An integral and unique aspect of Waldorf education is that policies such as these come directly from the faculty, the teachers, and administrators working together out of their direct observations, experience, and insights concerning our students. It takes time to reach decisions with this consensus-based, collaborative process: much more time than decisions that in other school settings would be handed down from a school head or, in the case of a public school, the superintendent, school board, or principal.

We trust that you will support the faculty in this change by sending your children to school in clothing that is tasteful and appropriate for school, rather than for a more casual or intimate environment. We appreciate your patience, your participation, and your feedback.

Michaelmas Pageant and Hike
Our annual Michaelmas pageant and hike will take place this Friday, September 29. Parents are encouraged to join us at 9:00 a.m. for the festivities: music, verse, and pageant, followed by challenging games for the students and a picnic lunch. You can download the schedule here

After lunch, we will hike to the summit of Mount Battie. A bus will depart from Ashwood at 12:00 p.m. and deliver grade-school students to the Route 52 Carriage Road trailhead. Because of very limited parking, we encourage parents who wish to join the hike to arrange carpooling to the trailhead. The most convenient option is to carpool from the Route 1, Camden Hills State Park Headquarters entrance.
NOTE: If you join the hike and park at the Route 52 trailhead, please make arrangements for transportation from the park back to your car!

After a snack atop Mt. Battie, we will continue down to the Camden Hills State Park Headquarters, where we will play games until dismissal time, 3:15 p.m. We encourage parents to arrive early and join in the games! All grade- school children must be picked up at Camden Hills State Park Headquarters at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, September 29.

Gear for the Hike
For the Michaelmas hike, we encourage parents to send their children to school wearing sturdy footwear and, if possible, a backpack (versus a satchel or sack) containing extra layers of clothing: it is often windy and several degrees cooler at the summit. Also include a hearty snack and plenty of water.

Michaelmas Picnic
There will be a picnic in the pavilion at Camden Hills State Park after the Michaelmas hike on Friday, September 29.  Come join other Ashwood families for popcorn and drink, and time to catch up with friends.  There's plenty of space to run and play, or just sit and visit!  The pavilion is in the picnic area across from the Mt. Battie entrance to the park. Gates to this area close at 5:00 p.m., but the pavilion is available until 7:00 p.m. if you park your vehicle across the street.  Come join the fun, rain or shine!  Hope to see you there.

Serve-A-Thon
Get your party hat on for a good cause!
Love to party? Love Ashwood? If you've been wanting to help out, but don't want to make a year-long time commitment, the dance committee may be just the ticket! Serve-A-Thon committee members are busy planning our big fundraiser for the spring, and the big launch will be a fabulous dance party.  We need a few willing souls for a short-term volunteer committee. Dance committee members will meet once a week to brainstorm and execute ideas for a theme, decorations, food, etc. from February through mid-March. If you're interested in helping out, contact Sarah Ewing in the main office!
