The Somers Library would like to thank the Somers Library Foundation for the wonderful new vestibule. You may have noticed that the main entrance has been closed for renovation over the last month, but it is now reopened and looking greatly improved. Please stop by the Library and check out all of the work that has been done!

We have many exciting new programs this fall, and if you have not had a chance to come I recommend it.  From TED Talks, to computer classes, to a retrospective on the golden age of radio & television, our staff has been hard at work to offer you the programs Somers deserves.  
Adult Events

Current events are listed below; check our Online Calendar for upcoming events. All programs take place at the Somers Library unless otherwise noted. Registration required for most programs. 
 
We the Poets: Poetry Workshop for Adults. Thursdays, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 12/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21, 12/28, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Beginner and experienced poets "will hold these truths to be self-evident" that all poems can be created using trial and error, serendipity along with learning the processes of craft in this poetry workshop. Discover your muse as Thea Schiller will introduce an established poem, lead a discussion an create in class writing exercises with time allotted to write and share each week. Participating members will be encouraged to expand their repertoire of poems.
 
Windows 10 Basics at the Somers Library. Tuesday, October 3, 10:30 - 12:30 pm. Learn how to navigate and be comfortable using Windows 10. This basic introduction will show you the ins and outs of the program. Bring your own laptop or other device. Space is limited.  
 
TED Talks at the Somers Library. Every 1st Thursday of the month: September 7, October 5, November 2, & December 7, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Join host Eugene Ritchie in discussion after viewing two TED talk speakers each session who will speak on a specific topic. Each talk will be followed by light refreshment. October 5th. Topic: Literature/Truth: Chiminanda Adichie, "The Danger of a Single Story"; Elizabeth Gilbert, "On Genius."  
 
Picasso's Pyrénées. Friday, October 6 at 1pm. About 100 years ago, a little mountain town in the French Pyrénées called Céret attracted artists Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Gris, Chagall, Dubuffet as well as writers Soutine, Dufy and Cocteau. This group became known as the School of Céret. Learn how this little town became a mecca for art.  
 
The Road to Publication . Saturday, October 7 at 1pm. The Hudson Valley Chapter of Romance Writers of America (HVRWA) has developed a free educational program for aspiring writers entitled, "The Road to Publication." The program discusses the journey of getting a book into print from the perspective of authors who are traditionally published as well as those who are self-published. Presenters will answer tough questions about today's market and the  presentation will be followed by a Q&A.
 
Computer Classes. Tuesdays, October 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, 10:30 - 12:30pm. Learn the basics of the computer at these introductory classes that concentrates on one program per class: Windows 10 Basics, Word 1, Word 2, Email basics and How to Use the Internet. Please bring your own laptop or device. Space is limited.

Medicare 101. Tuesday, October 10, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. This course is designed to address the life events for everyone who is Medicare eligible, whether you are already retired or just wanting to learn about the various options available. The following topics will be covered: Navigating through the Parts A, B, C & D; Whether to purchase a Medigap or Supplemental plan; Whether to buy a separate prescription drug plan (PDP); the differences and similarities of the Advantage Plans (known as Part C with D); and the various costs associated Medicare, Supplements or Gaps, Drug Plans and Advantage Plans.  
 
The Artistry of Gene Kelly. Friday, October 13 at 1pm. Actor, director, singer, dancer, producer, and choreographer all describe the talented Gene Kelly. Using classic video & audio clips, this program will showcase his enduring legacy.   
 
Bridge for Beginners. Mondays, October 16 - December 18, 1:30 - 3:00pm. Learn the mechanics of the game, how to play a hand of bridge, bidding basics, scoring and more. Space is limited.
 
Money Talks . Tuesday, October 17 at 6pm. Learn about the importance of teaching your child about money, ways to help them make good decisions, and the benefit of smart choices.
 
The Golden Age of Radio and Television...A Retrospective . Friday, October 20 at 1pm. This nostalgia-filled program will examine a wide range of popular radio and television shows and personalities, focusing primarily on the years 1935-1965.  Using a variety of audio and video clips, participants will have a great opportunity to relive and discuss c lassic comedy and variety shows.
 
Performance of MARRIAGE IS MURDER by Nick Hall . Sunday, October 22nd at 2 - 4 pm. M&M Performing Arts will be presenting Marriage is Murder, the murderously funny comedy by Nick Hall. Ex-spouses Paul and Polly Butler write murder mysteries together and act out the crimes in Paul's apartment. There are many fast paced comic twists as they attempt to outdo and surprise each other and they learn that marriage, like murder, is in the details. Directed by Maureen Howard with Carol Eagen and Dick Smith.  Space is limited, no registration, first come, first served.
 
What Can I Eat? Foods to Lower Blood Pressure, Cholesterol, and Manage Blood Sugar . Monday, October 23 at 1:30pm. Learn which foods to choose and lifestyle changes to make to help lower your blood pressure, cholesterol and manage your blood sugar. 
 
Winter Watercolors . Mondays, Oct. 30, Nov 6, 20, 27, Dec. 4, 18 at 10:30am at Somers Library. Explore making winter scenes with water colors & salt -to create dramatic effects! The winter brings us crystal images and we will make them as well.  Bring your watercolors and your imagination, and learn to make great effects in your art work. $30 instructor fee paid at the first class.
 
Ongoing Events 
 
Coloring Book Club for Adults. Relax, color, socialize - all for free at Somers Library! Materials are provided, or bring your own colored pencils and coloring books (recommended.) Registration is not required; meetings will be held in the conference room every Friday from 10:30-12:30. 
   
Westchester Writers. 6:30pm on the first, third and fifth Thursday of each month in the program room. Join a safe, supportive, and creative environment to share literary works in progress. This is not a writing class, but rather an ongoing group of writers offering assistance to its members who are looking to improve their writing skills through positive feedback and helpful critiques. Beginners as well as experienced writers over the age of 18 are welcome.

Anime Club - This club meets every Wednesday starting 9/13 from 3:00-4:30 pm. Join us for a chance to watch anime from Crunchyroll with your friends! 

Teen/Tween Pokemon Club - Join us at the Somers Library to meet, discuss and battle your friends using your Nintendo 3DS!  This program is for teens/tweens in grades 5th and up. Meeting dates are Fridays on the following dates:  9/15, 9/29, 10/27, 11/3, 11/17, 12/1, & 12/15 from 3:15-4:30. Please register here. 
 
Anime Nights! -  Join us for a chance to watch anime from Crunchyroll with your friends. Meets one Friday a month from 5:00 - 7:00pm on the following dates 9/15, 10/13, 11/3, & 12/1*.  (*Meet time for 12/1 meeting is 4:30-6:30 pm).  
 
Preparing Your Child for College - Grades 9 & 10: Tuesday, October 3rd at 7:00 pm This Program is for Parents, but students are welcome!  Register here.

Teen Color Me Book Creation: Saturday, October 7th from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm - Create and design your very own handmade coloring page scrapbook with art teacher Wendy Podell by melding collage & scrapbooking techniques. This program is intended for teens & tweens entering grade 6 and up. Register here.

The Somers Library/SHS Library Teen Advisory Group (TAG) - Thursdays (10/12, 10/26, 11/9, 11/30 & 12/14) from 2:00-2:30 pm in the Somers High School Library.  The TAG is made up of high school volunteers who work together with the librarians (Ms Read & Mrs. Ferretti) to help create and promote library events and resources for the young adult community of Somers and to help the libraries better understand teen patrons and their needs.  TAG offers leadership opportunities and community service hours, giving members an opportunity to build a portfolio of activities that reflect their abilities. Note Taking and Studying Effectively: Students Grades 6-12 & their Parents - Thursday, October 12 from 7:30-9 pm.   In this workshop, master teacher and President of Crimson Coaching™, an elite tutoring firm serving Westchester County and the New York City metropolitan area, Dr. Dominique Padurano teaches students a variety of techniques for note taking and studying. She also guides parents through how to effectively monitor and assist their children at home as they experiment with these new strategies. Students must be accompanied by a parent and should bring a pen / pencil and a notebook. Register here.

Chess for Beginners & Intermediate Players - Grades 6th and up! - Mondays this fall from 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm. Meeting dates: 10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20, 11/27, 12/4, 12/11, & 12/18 - Please register here.

Teen Creative Writers Workshop - Thursdays from 3:15pm to 4:45pm on the following dates: 10/26, 11/9, 11/30, 12/14, 1/4, 1/18, 2/1, 2/15 & 3/1. Work on developing your creative writing in a fun & encouraging environment! This program is geared towards students in 7th grade and up.  Register here.

College Planning: Study Skills, Test Prep, and the Application: Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00 pm - Join educator Dr. Tony Di Giacomo for a presentation focused on parents of students in grades 8 through 12. All are welcome! Space is limited, please register here.

Ghost Hunter 101 - Saturday, October 28th at 2:00 - 3:30 pm - Join paranormal investigator Barry Pirro of ConnecticutGhostHunter.com who will share chilling stories from recent investigations, play recordings of real ghosts, and share ghost hunting tips. Questions will be answered and members of the audience will have a chance to share their ghost stories. This event is geared toward adults and young adults, ages 12 and up. StoryWalk returns October 16-October 30!   In the Middle of Fall by Kevn Henkes will  be posted around the exterior of the library. Come into the library during hours and receive a cookie for completing the StoryWalk. Cookies are provided courtesy of Friends of Somers Library.

Stepping Back in Time- Local History for Kids with Town Historian Doris Jane Smith! New material each session! Dates:  Oct 3, 17; Nov 14, 28; Dec 12.

Star Party! Westchester Amateur Astronomers is setting up telescopes in Upper Reis! Wednesday, Oct 25 at 6:15pm. Rain/cloud date is Friday, Oct 27 same time.  Dress for the weather. Cupcake Decorating with Marlene Sable! Thursday, October 26 from 3:45-4:45 for students in Grades 3-5. Use fondant to decorate like the experts!  Register here.

Halloween StoryTime and Parade! Doris Jane Smith will read Halloween stories and then lead a parade around the library to Trick-or-Treat at four stations! Monday, October 30 @ 4:00-4:45.  No registration necessary.  Candy provided courtesy of Friends of Somers Library.

Flowers: The flowers that you see at the library are sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library and donated by local businesses. We thank Mancini Realty for donating this month's flower arrangement.

Artist: Artist: Our featured artist this month is Kenton Gomez. Kenton is a wildlife photographer specializing in the Birds and Mammals of North America.  His work has been featured on CBS News, The Weather Channel, and various print and online resources.  Raised in Westchester County, Kenton currently resides in Riverdale, Bronx.  His work can be seen at www.kentongomez.com.

It was great fun to meet so many library lovers at Celebrate Somers on September 9th - thanks for stopping by our booth. And a big thank you to the many businesses and individuals who sponsored our 5K Trail Run on September 17th, as well as to the many runners and walkers who participated in this annual event. We are also grateful to our volunteers who helped make this event run smoothly.
