  • staff reps Dale Markling and Steve Torgerson will be attending the Wicihitowin Aboriginal Engagement Conference in Saskatoon on Oct. 11 and 12
  • staff rep Lawrence Maier will meet with members of Local 9 (Hi-Pro Feeds) in Chilliwack on Sunday

One thing that makes shift work bearable is having a set schedule worked out far in advance. Shift workers plan their lives around days off. Working nights and weekends puts a great strain on daily living, and especially family life. Having and following a clear, well-defined, consistent plan lets shift workers set appointments, reserve family time, and make the best of their difficult changes from days to nights and inconsistent days off.
 
Last minute changes to employees' schedules leaves employees scrambling to reorganize their responsibilities for months. Day care, vacations, appointments - all the things workers on shift must coordinate far in advance have to be rescheduled, and that can be difficult or even impossible when you only have a few hours' notice.  
 
"With GSU's annual meetings coming up, and a number of collective agreements set to open, members should make a real effort to bargain notice provisions that respect their right to have a stable, reliable shift schedule," says GSU staff representatives Lawrence Maier.

and Trisha Clarke (Local 15 - CPS Melfort) - our latest ticket winners who will be attending the Riders' October 13 game against the Redblacks.

We had a lot of fun reading the answers to last week's TMM and web page contest questions. In fact, some of your answers actually made us laugh out loud.
  • If our Tuesday Members' Memo question been an actual contest, Karen would have won a lifetime supply of dog antibiotics as it was the last thing she purchased before answering our contest question.
  • Trisha entered and won our web page draw by telling us if she were to be saved by the cast of the last show she watched, it would be the cast of Bones who would race to her rescue.

Talk less, listen more

Greek philosopher Epictetus said, "We have two ears and one mouth so we can listen twice as much as we speak."  

People love to talk and people love to be heard. If you are a good listener your relationships with others will be harmonious, people will like you, and you may even learn a thing or two.
