Board Impact and Information

September 26, 2017

Give Advocate Volunteer
To help our community respond to the tragedy at Freeman High School we were asked by community partners to establish a fund to support the Freeman School District. We are not actively fundraising for the Freeman Community but are sharing our expertise to support their needs. This fund will be managed in coordination with the Freeman Recovery and Wellness Committee. Tim Henkel will recruit a Board member to participate in the development of fund guidelines and procedures.

CommunityImpact
Planning and Evaluation Pilot with EWU
Acting on the recommendation of the Community Impact Committee, the Board approved a new pilot project. Spokane County United Way is collaborating with Dr. Vernon Loke and Master of Social Work students from Eastern Washington University. This collaboration formed to provide nonprofits training on program planning and evaluation, logic models and program measures. The desire is to equip nonprofits with the ability to have an up-to-date program logic model, be able to showcase the effectiveness of a program to the community and donors, strengthen program design by clearly articulating goals, objectives, program theory and performance measures. Spokane County United Way is providing mini grants to participating nonprofits to recognize the commitment of staff time needed for this pilot. We look forward to this pilot program as part of our commitment to make constructive changes to enhance program effectiveness.

CommunicationsandmarketingDay of Action and Make A Meal For Many
We hosted a very successful volunteer event! Our volunteers are saying things like:
  • "Tremendously uplifting experience for just a short amount of my time."
  • It was a wonderful experience for my teenage sons and I, we will definitely look for opportunities to volunteer again!"

With 600 volunteers giving over $30,000 worth of volunteer impact they packaged five semi-trucks of food into family sized meals of ten bean chili.

Thank you to our sponsors that provided us the ability to partner with Second Harvest to secure locally sourced food for this event. Going forward the 140,000 meals, accompanied with a recipe to create veggie chili, will be distributed through Second Harvest and their 250+ food banks and pantries and mobile food distributions.

We are pleased with the success of this event, from the experience the volunteers had to the impact this creates for our community.
