Makers to assemble for summit on creative solutions

Entrepreneurs, educators, students, suppliers and creators
of all kinds will gather at the John Q. Hammons Convention Center in Rogers on Oct. 16 for Arkansas Maker Summit 2017.

The event is hosted by the Scott Family Amazeum in partnership with the Hub, the Arkansas Discovery Network and the Greater Bentonville Area Chamber of Commerce. The main topics will be Arkansas's developing maker movement and the relationship between making and creative solutions.

"Creating an integrated network of makers supports the idea behind making as a process for creating innovation by tapping into the expertise of a diverse population," explained Sam Dean, executive director of the Scott Family Amazeum. "Plus, it's a lot more fun when we all play together."

The summit begins with networking at 8:30 a.m., followed by breakout sessions from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The breakout sessions will look at makerspaces in different contexts: K-12 schools, extracurricular settings and business environments.

Joel Gordon, the Hub's executive director, and Jeff Amerine, founder of Startup Junkie Consulting, will lead a session on making in small business, community and entrepreneurial settings. Joel will also share how making supports micromanufacturing in starting and scaling a business.

"We are excited to invite Innovation Hub to Northwest Arkansas to help advance the maker movement throughout the state," said Sam. "The opening of the Conductor at the University of Central Arkansas and the Garage at Arkansas State show how communities are supporting making."

3-D design partnership topic of October talk
As part of our third Friday activities next month, we have a great Hub-UB lined up! Our speaker will be Martin Bogan, who leads CAE USA's multi-disciplined media team in designing interactive, virtual and augmented reality training applications.

Martin's presentation will cover the cooperative training program, which began in 2015 as an initiative between CAE USA's media department, based in Sherwood, and Southern Arkansas University. The partnership allows animation and game art students to gain real-world experience in 3-D design.

It all takes place at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in our Co-Work space. Hub-UBs happen on the third Friday of each month and are sponsored by Flyway and 107 Liquor. If you would like to suggest a presenter for this series, contact Errin Stanger at estanger@arhub.org.
Hub offers field trip programs for home-schoolers
Did you know? The Hub's field trip resources are open to home-schooling groups, with programs available as multi-week series or one-time educational experiences.

All our field trip options are available to home-schoolers, and we'll work with your group to discuss options based on your needs. We can set up one-day trips, or 4-, 6- or 8-week programs, focused on one or more of our art and making topics. We'll even continue a series across multiple years!

Parents of home-schoolers can sign up through our Field Trips page -- if you have a group of at least five students, simply fill out the form for either the maker or art and design field trip. We'll get in touch and work out the best options with you.
Meet local makers at the Hub, Oct. 6
Don't forget: The Hub is hosting an open house 1-3 p.m. Oct. 6 in observance of MFG DAY! In addition to seeing our new micromanufacturing lab in action, you will be able to meet our local makers and find out how they are using the Hub's tools and resources.

Jill Curran and Jason Duncan will be among the makers who will exhibit their products.

Jill has been using our laser cutter to make miniature houses based on 1860s cottages on Martha's Vineyard, which she sells at a shop on the island. She also has been creating illuminated artwork based on classic rock album covers, Wonder Woman headbands, Arkansas-themed Christmas ornaments, hair combs and other small items.

Jason has been combining familiar items in new ways to create art. In the lab, he works with engraved acrylic, concrete, wood, metal and electronic lighting to create home decor, unique business signs and one-of-a-kind trophies.

Be sure to stop by to see some of this creative work. Plus, representatives from Arkansas Manufacturing Solutions will be on hand to explain their role in our micromanufacturing setup and answer questions about their services.
The Innovation Hub is very grateful for the ongoing generous support provided by IBERIABANK.
