The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)

Do congregants want to do "something" to help flood survivors in Texas, Florida and other places? How about getting trained to actually go to places affected by natural disasters? Would you like to be "the Hands and Feet of Jesus"?

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has a training program called Early Response Teams which prepares folks to work in disaster sites such as Texas and Florida, as well as in our own communities, knowing what to do and how to do the work safely, being self sufficient and self sustaining so as not to place any additional burdens on the devastated community.

A Basic Early Response Team class will be held in the Conference Center in Liverpool, NY on Saturday Oct. 28 at 8 AM and concluding at 5 PM. The class members will receive an ERT manual, training, hands-on practice placing a tarp on a portable roof, discussions of what to say and what not to say to survivors, what tools and equipment to use, how to clean out a flooded house, what personal protective equipment is needed, as well as coffee, snacks and lunch, a Safe Sanctuaries background check, and an UMCOR photo ID badge all for just $25.00. People from other denominations are welcome to attend.

Requirements are only that one be 18 or over, of average physical fitness, able to carry a bucket of water up a set of stairs, available on short notice (many of us are retired), and willing to be a team player, taking directions from an experienced team leader. A typical ERT trip includes travel time and 3 days on-site of actual disaster response, then home again.

Registration for the Liverpool Oct. 28 class can be done online at http://tinyurl.com/LiverpoolERT or call me at 716-763-7735 if you have questions.

Another identical training class has been scheduled for Nov. 18 at the Alexander UMC, Alexander, NY (near Darien) and registration is online at http://tinyurl.com/AlexanderERT

Download October Issue II of the Bridge

The October Issue II copy of the Bridge is now available for download. It is available in both color and black & white formats. Click here to select the version you prefer and make copies as necessary. This issue features Upper New York Area Resident Bishop Mark J. Webb's Taskforce to Eliminate Racism. This issue also includes reminders about the need for prayers for the victims, family members, and first responders to the devastating Las Vegas shooting as well as ways to respond to those affected by Hurricane Maria.

As a bi-monthly publication, the Bridge can be used this Sunday or next, whichever is most useful to the local church. The Bridge is a communications tool designed for local churches to stay connected to each other and to the ministries taking place around the Upper New York Conference and The United Methodist Church. The newest volume will be listed at the top of the webpage, with older volumes below. The Bridge is designed to be handed out in worship, as a church bulletin insert, or as a standalone item.
