Engineering academy parents take tour

Now in its seventh year, the Southwire Engineering Academy, known by the acronym SWEA, holds a parent orientation tour each fall once Carrollton High School students involved in the program have settled into their routine as engineering interns. Southwire engineers work directly with the students to assist them in coming up with solutions to real Southwire challenges, ranging from improving manufacturing flow to cut production time to creating apps to assist in data collection. Students are also exposed to a real work environment and are expected to make presentations and collaborate with other Southwire employees, helping them develop critical soft skills expected in a competitive business environment. Prior to the tour, Southwire President  and CEO Rich Stinson and Carrollton City Schools Supt. Dr. Mark Albertus addressed the parents and students who gathered in the plaza area outside corporate headquarters. CJHS Community
Market Day Sept. 30

Don't forget about Carrollton Junior High School's annual Community Market Day to be held  Saturday, Sept. 30, from  8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Vendors, businesses and individuals with items to sell or advertise have reserved spaces to sell their items and keep the profit.

A unique feature will be the mini escape room presented by Way Out Games and the CJHS BROTHER club will be holding a car wash, said Kristen Ebensberger, one of the organizers of the event.

In addition to a variety of anticipated vendors on site, there will be entertaining music, activities for kids, and hot dogs, chips, cotton candy and drinks will be sold.

Culinary Arts club at CES a big hit
This past Thursday was the first meeting of Carrollton Elementary School's new Culinary Arts Club. The startup is so popular there is already a waiting list for the next semester. Students took a tour of the cafeteria's kitchen and helped make cole slaw. Students then taste-tested the cole slaw and completed journal entries about the experience. Above, Dr. Linette Dodson, director of School Nutrition, supervises a student serving up his sample. The club, open to second and third graders and sponsored by School Nutrition, meets weekly after school and is led by Sara Black, the School Nutrition's FoodCorps service member, and Jill Horsley, CES cafeteria manager.
CES to host 'book tasting'

Carrollton Elementary School will be holding its first Parent Engagement Night of the school year Tuesday, Sept. 26, featuring a "book tasting" event to encourage an appetite for good books.

Assistant Principal Kylie Carroll noted  each grade level will showcase a specific book and provide parents and families with easy ways to support reading comprehension at home. Resources will include basic comprehension information, "create and take" tools for at home practice, and giveaways.

"We are excited to partner with families in helping students enjoy and understand  'deliciously' good books," she said.

The CES Book Tasting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Above is Camilla Cream from the book "A Bad Case of Stripes" who will be visiting the tasting along with other book characters.
