Two students to represent K-State Polytechnic in Fly Kansas Air Tour

An airport management and professional pilot student will take to the skies this year for Kansas State Polytechnic in the Fly Kansas Air Tour.

Jacob Spain, a senior from Lawrence, and Trever Linn, a senior from Flagler, Colorado, will fly in the three-day, 10-city event representing the campus. The Fly Kansas Air Tour takes off from Wellington on Thursday, Sept. 28 and travels through Liberal, Dodge City, Hays, Concordia, Atchison, New Century, Pittsburg and Independence before making a final stop in Benton on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Along with being a  celebration of Kansas aviation, this year's tour will promote science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, education as well as highlight the benefits of local airports. The Fly Kansas Air Tour  is presented by the Kansas Commission on Aerospace Education and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

During each stop, interested community members can view the planes in the tour up close and talk with the pilots to learn about aviation in general and its role in Kansas. If you are able to make it to one of the tour locations, make sure to say hi to Jacob and Trever.

Professor Nichols to give 'Drone Wars' presentation at K-State Polytechnic Oct. 6

Randall Nichols, Kansas State Polytechnic professor of practice, will be giving a special presentation on campus next month focusing on unmanned aircraft systems or drones.

Professor Nichols will present "Drone Wars: Threats, Vulnerabilities and Hostile Use of UAS" on Friday, Oct. 6 at 3:30 p.m. in the College Center Conference Room. Faculty, staff and students, specifically undergrads in the UAS degree options, are encouraged to attend.

The presentation will cover UAS automation, collaboration, conventional vulnerabilities and countermeasures as well as commercial UAS sophistication, sense and avoid and SCADA systems. The overall goal of the message is to offer a wake-up call on drone threats and solutions to reduce risks.

This presentation is part of the K-State  Research, Scholarship, Creative Activity, and Discovery, or  RSCAD,  Lecture Series.

K-State's emergency notification system to be tested Sept. 27

K-State Alerts will test the university's emergency notification system at
1:20 p.m. Wednesday,  Sept. 27 , in conjunction with the National Emergency Alert System test. The test includes text messaging and automated phone calls for those who have signed up for K-State Alerts.

The test also will include notifications on the university's home page, email messages, Twitter and Facebook posts, alert beacons in various buildings on campus and the tornado sirens. The wall-mounted alert beacons will emit a loud siren, flash strobe lights and provide digital scrolling text for two minutes. They can't be turned off during the test.

K-State Alerts is the university's primary messaging system for timely emergency notifications. The university uses K-State Alerts when a dangerous condition exists on any of the three campuses, such as an active shooter, tornado, snow day or other dangerous weather that may close campus or to inform about the reopening a campus following a forced closure.
K-State Polytechnic welcomes 310th Bombardment Wing back to campus

For the veterans of the 310th Bombardment Wing, visiting the Polytechnic Campus was like returning home. That's because these heroes were stationed on the campus property in the 1950's and 1960's when it was Smoky Hill and later Schilling Air Force Base.

On Sept. 20, members of the 310th Bomb Wing were treated to a tour of K-State Polytechnic's unmanned aircraft systems program by staff and students of the campus's Applied Aviation Research Center. They were broken up into three rotating groups, traveling from the UAS Lab to the Smoky Hill UAS Pavilion to the Welcome Center. Their activities included learning about the UAS program's history and future trajectory, exploring the UAS fleet and flying drones in the netted pavilion.

In addition to their stop at K-State Polytechnic, the 310th bomb wing members also connected with the Salina Airport Authority and toured many buildings around town with Visit Salina. They even stopped by their old homes.

During their time on base, the veterans were trained in B-29 airplanes and then received KC-97 tankers for refueling missions.
Social Work Wildcats student club supports 'Undies for Everyone'
The Social Work Wildcats are using their campus club for good.

The group of students has decided to join the national initiative "Undies for Everyone" to help out the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Social Work Wildcats has been asking for underwear donations from members of the Polytechnic Campus because they are one of the most basic needs that are greatly appreciated by those affected, but not always thought of.

Undies for Everyone has collected more than 550,000 pairs of underwear in total for the recent hurricane victims. This agency gives the donated underwear to local colleges, churches and community centers.

A high-five is one of the most recognizable ways two people can share excitement or celebrate a job well done. Kansas State Polytechnic's CEO and Dean Verna Fitzsimmons awards her high-five each week to honor faculty, staff and students for their dedication to the university.

Thank you to Women in Aviation for encouraging the next generation of aviators!

High-five to the K-State Polytechnic chapter of Women in Aviation for organizing a professional, comprehensive and fun event for Girls in Aviation Day this past Saturday. I am so proud of your desire to encourage the next generation of aviators and appreciate your commitment to your career field.

Girls in Aviation Day is an important event on campus because it gives the local community an opportunity to connect with our faculty and students as well as learn about our aviation degree options. It shows children, in particularly young women, that a career in aviation is possible and it plants the seed early for these future aviators to obtain their education as a Wildcat.
