Outreach Grants Announced
2017 Outreach Mini-Grants Awarded: Thirty-three member libraries have been awarded mini-grants totaling more than $53,000 through New York State Outreach Categorical Aid funds, received from the NYS Library Division of Library Development by the Mid-Hudson Library System, to develop programs and services to attract and connect to outreach target populations and form relevant community partnerships at the local level.
 
Outreach target populations [as defined in Education Law §273 (1) (h) (1)] are people who are educationally disadvantaged, members of ethnic or minority groups in need of special library services, unemployed, blind, physically disabled, have developmental or learning disabilities, or who are aged or confined in institutions.

MHLS Announcements
The MHLS Board of Trustees met on Wednesday, September 13, in the 2nd Floor Community Room of the Kingston Library, and:
  • thanked Director, Margie Menard, and the staff of the Kingston Library for hosting and facilitating the meeting;
  • reviewed the draft Action Plans for Phase III System Services` developed by System staff;
  • reviewed (2010-2017) member library usage statistics of E-Books & E-Audiobooks (OverDrive) products;
  • discussed the program and registration for the 58th MHLS Annual Membership Meeting, at the Henry A. Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Home, Hyde Park;
  • briefly reviewed the speakers scheduled for the Symposium - Women in Politics: Past, Present, & Future - A Recognition of the Centennial of Women's right to Vote in New York, to be presented following the Annual Membership Meeting;
  • approved the MHLS 2017 mid-year adjusted budget;
  • authorized expenditure of $206,947of 2017 MHLS Funds for the MHLS capital improvement project for Phase II renovation of the MHLS Auditorium;
  • approved revisions to the MHLS Operating Reserve Fund and Operating Contingency Fund policies;
  • approved recommendations for 2017-2018 member library and MHLS NYS Construction Grant awards;
  • authenticated the System's Construction Grant Project Application for 2018;
  • approved the following dates for its 2018 meetings: Saturday, January 27, (snow date, Saturday, February 3) ; Saturday, March 17, (snow date, Saturday, March 24); Wednesday, May 9; Wednesday, July 11; Wednesday, September 12; Saturday, December 8 (snow date, Saturday, December 15). The Annual Membership Meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 2; The May and September Outreach meetings will be held at member libraries, to be announced.
  • were presented a report by Margie Menard, Director of the Kingston Library/Chair Ulster County Directors Association, highlighting how Ulster County libraries work individually and cooperatively to provide activities and resources that are uniquely designed for patrons in their communities.

MHLS Board members enjoyed a tour of the Kingston Library's new children's and teen spaces after their board meeting on September 13th, 2017.
 
The Southeastern NY Library Resources Council has recently made some changes to their bylaws that will positively impact staff from MHLS member libraries . Individual public libraries that are members of a public library system are considered an affiliate and their employees are eligible for certain Southeastern benefits under this membership category including: You can now become involved in Southeastern committees or other networking programs and special interest groups (a benefit previously reserved for governing members only), and you will no longer pay a higher cost for professional development programs as there is now one price, regardless of member, or library type. Greene Correctional Facility: Library Clerk 2, Grade 9
Greene Correctional Facility has one provisional opening for a Library Clerk. Library Clerk 2 - Grade 9 - Paid Provisional Position - 20 hours per week. Duties: Library Clerk 2, performs specialized library clerical activities in support of a library program, such as copy cataloging, organizing and maintaining the library collection, circulation tasks, and collections at satellite locations.  May supervise inmate workers in library job tasks.
