Your Input Needed: Engage, Listen, Prioritize for 2018
Over the past few months, CFPA has been listening to the input of hundreds of Californians from around the state. We heard your thoughts, concerns, and emerging opportunities to increase low-income Californians' access to affordable, nutritious food.
Now we're asking for your help once more to tell us which issues should be prioritized in 2018.

As we listened, we heard many recurring issues and themes in regards to the challenges Californians face in order to provide themselves and their families with the food we all need to live healthy lives.
- Concerns about housing affordability and its impact on economic stability and hunger were forefront.
- Federal threats to healthcare and the safety net loomed large.
- Respondents voiced concerns about populations who may be most vulnerable to hunger and poor nutrition.
- Many others voiced hope about possibilities to expand promising practices to improve food access throughout the state.

Federal Update:
Action Needed! Tell Congress to Oppose Graham-Cassidy ACA Repeal Bill
Despite the recent news that Senator Collins (R-ME) has stated she will oppose the Graham-Cassidy bill, the latest effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act and take away health care from millions of Americans is still alive and could be voted on this week. Your voices are being heard, but are still needed to prevent this harmful proposal from passing at the last minute. The Senate's rushed process has not allowed time for a comprehensive analysis from the Congressional Budget Office, but we do know that the bill would:
- Take away health coverage from millions of low-income Californians by block granting and capping Medicaid funding;
- Make health care coverage unaffordable for millions of low- and moderate-income Californians by eliminating ACA marketplace subsidies, and;
- Eliminate protections for consumers with pre-existing conditions.
Californians would be hit especially hard. By 2026, the state would lose over
$27 billion per year in federal funding for Medi-Cal, which covers over 1 in 3 low-income Californians who already struggle to meet their basic needs like housing, transportation, and food.

If you live in one of the districts below, it's incredibly important that you call your representative now. These members voted in support of the House ACA repeal bill (AHCA) earlier this year, but now they need to hear that this bill is even worse for Californians.
Please take a few minutes today to make a call and tell them to oppose the Graham-Cassidy bill and protect healthcare for vulnerable Californians. This week, Celebrate 40 Years of SNAP Success: Coming Together to Fight Hunger!
Forty years ago this week, with wide-ranging bipartisan support, Congress created the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (known then as the Food Stamp Program and now known as SNAP, or CalFresh in California). SNAP has since proven to be the most effective and successful anti-hunger program in the nation. It responds during economic downturns and provides modest but important benefits that help millions of hard-working Californians put food on the table.
This week, join CFPA and our national, state and local partners as we celebrate SNAP's 40 years of success and reaffirm our shared commitment to ensuring that the millions of children, seniors, and working families who are helped by SNAP continue to have access to healthy food and greater opportunity to succeed.

Save the Date! 2018 CalFresh Forum Feb 28 in Sacramento
Each year, California Food Policy Advocates' (CFPA) CalFresh Forum brings together hundreds of key
stakeholders from across the state to identify opportunities and discuss strategies to improve the reach and impact of CalFresh. The next CalFresh Forum is co-sponsored by the California Department of Social Services and will be held on February 28, 2018 in Sacramento, CA.
Stay tuned for registration details and a call for 2018 Freshy Award nominations, which recognize the efforts of individual Californians, as well as organizations, from across the state that have worked diligently in the last year to improve CalFresh.
