10/17 - CHHE & Toxicology Program Co-sponsored Seminar  - Jason Richardson, Northeast Ohio Med. University "Mechanisms of Gene-Environment Interactions in Alzheimer's Disease"

The UNC-CH Lineberger Cancer Center (LCC) has set aside 3-4 pilot projects ($50K/each) for NC State faculty. Importantly, for this RFA you do not need a UNC-CH LCC member collaborator to submit a proposal. Proposals are due 10/15/17. This is an excellent opportunity for funding but also to become more engaged with the UNC-CH LCC. Click here for flyer describing the pilot grant program.

It's October 15-19, 2017, held in RTP at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel.  Jane Hoppin is one of the co-chairs and CHHE members Jamie DeWitt, Chris Frey, Aaron Hipp, Carolyn Mattingly, Katy May, and David Reif are among the presenters. The meeting features a diverse set of plenary speakers including NCSU Chancellor Randy Woodson and Karletta Chief of the Navajo Nation talking about indigenous peoples response to climate change. The meeting will highlight the diversity of research in exposure assessment topics, including risk assessment, exposure modeling, toxicological modeling, epidemiology, and science communication. We're hoping to have more community partners at the meeting; community partners can register at the student rate.

CHHE's Aaron Hipp along with George Hess and Trung Vo led August's Beer-Reviewed Science, The ROAD Ahead (Raleigh Opportunities for Active Design). Following the launch of NC State's bicycle share program, a crowd of local residents joined in the discussion about how to make choices for a healthier active lifestyle focusing on the challenges of bicycle commuting around Raleigh and the Triangle. This month also marked the start of a new collaboration with UNC-TV who filmed the event which will be broadcast soon.

This month the COEC received 28 proposals for its Community Mini Grant program from all across the state. Topics range from citizen science, to environmental education, healthy homes, and water quality monitoring. The COEC and members of CHHE will spend much of September reviewing and scoring the proposals. We hope to fund three projects again this year. Stay tuned for next month's announcement of our 2017-2018 Mini Grantees!
