Board of Education Meeting Summary
  BOE meeting
The September Board of Education meeting took place on Thursday, September 21. After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited and the agenda adopted, the consent agenda (see details in BoardDocs) was approved.

The Board of Education has set the following goals and will provide updates throughout the school year on their progress:
1. Achieve Governance Team Award.
2. Complete MSBA Self-Evaluation.
3. Complete one work session.

Each month we watch a video update from the Missouri School Board Association which is hosted by Brent Ghan. That report can be found HERE. This month Price Elementary reached out to Mr. Ghan at MSBA and he agreed to assist them in the creation of their video which was developed to showcase their building. It was a fun way to celebrate the great things happening at Price! You can watch the Price Elementary video HERE.

During the student recognition portion of the meeting RMS and RHS Project Lead the Way students provided a summary of the classroom opportunities available. Students shared about their hands on learning experiences from green building projects and medical exploration to engineering and computer programming. The PLTW coursework has greatly increased over the last few years. At this time over 600 RMS and RHS students are enrolled in PLTW courses.

This rating applies to the series 2017 general obligation school building and refunding bonds. To see Mr. Bartow's report visit BoardDocs.

For the last three years district's across Missouri received funding to provide the ACT test free to all juniors. We were informed that this funding was no longer available earlier this summer, and began researching the best way to approach providing helpful student assessments to best meet the future plans of RHS students. The ACT will be available for those on a college track, the ASVAB will be available for students with plans to join the military and the ACT WorkKeys assessment will be available to students planning to enter the career force directly after high school. Below is a snapshot, and further information will be communicated to RHS families.

Mr. Chance Wistrom, Superintendent of Schools, provided an update to the Board of Education. This included information regarding finances, enrollment, celebrations and an update from DESE. Full administrative reports can be found on BoardDocs

Lyon Students Meet Secretary Zinke
On September 21 20 fourth grade students from Lyon Elementary had the opportunity to meet United States Secretary of the Interior, Ryan Zinke and Congressman Billy Long at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield!

To celebrate fourth grade students across the country getting into national parks for free throughout this year, Lyon Elementary fourth graders were invited to participate in an art contest to create pieces that will be featured in Wilson's Creek National Battlefield's annual calendar. The 20 students who attended the event today are winners of this contest and will have their artwork featured in the aforementioned calendar set to be released in December 2017.

These students did a wonderful job representing our school district and community! We are thankful to recieve this opportunity for our students, and appreciate those who made it possible!

Springfield-Greene County Library Partnership
The Republic School District is thrilled to be the first pilot district to partner with the Springfield-Greene County Library for the student access card program. This initiative provides access to a number of reliable databases full of endless resources! A few examples of the resources available include Tumblebooks, Credo, Biography in Context, Mango Languages, Lynda.com, Culturegrams Kids...and SO MUCH MORE!

Because of this partnership our students and employees have access to resources they may not have otherwise, we can ensure that the information they are obtaining is credible and they can access it in a safe manner 24 hours a day! Yes, this resource is available any time using the " Springfield-Greene County Library Database" link under "Quick Links" at  republicschools.org. To gain access, students and employees can use their district assigned Google username as the login and password.

Questions can be directed to your student's school librarian.

While this resource provides SO MUCH for our students, we encourage each student having their own individual library card and frequent visits to the library as well! You can learn more HERE.

What a tremendous opportunity we have with this partnership. Thank you Springfield-Greene County Library!

RMS & RHS Families: Canvas Tips
Below are a few tips for our secondary families in regards to Canvas, the district's learning management system.

How do I add my other secondary children to my parent Canvas account?
When you first create an account in Canvas, one child is linked to you. To add additional secondary children, Click "Account", then "Settings" in the top right corner. Then click "Observing" in the left menu. Enter their email address and 8-digit student password. Click here for directions.

How do I set my notifications as a parent observer in Canvas?
Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences you can receive for the courses you are observing. Notifications are sent to Canvas contact methods as specified in your account User Settings. However, you can change the default settings by setting your own notification preferences. These preferences only apply to you; they are not used to control how course updates are sent to the student you are observing.  Click here to learn how to change those settings.

What should I be looking for in Canvas now as an RMS/RHS parent?
You should begin to see student grades in Canvas. These will be the most up-to-date grades. SIS Parent Portal will only be updated weekly, on average.
You can also notify teachers through Canvas and see upcoming assignments and announcements.

Soon, we will be sending directions on how to add Canvas to your phone. In addition, we will continue to provide Canvas tips throughout the year as the need arises.
