Moving Intelligent Change Forward
September, 2017 Vol. 2 - In This Issue:
In the midst of (another) fierce battle over health care coverage, I'm struck by the disconnect between policy and the actual needs of patients. All the investment in new technologies, advanced therapies, better data, bigger data will be best served if we focus on the needs of the patients first. Basic care (including dental!), access to services and supports that make wellness and recovery a reality, and transparency and real dialogue between providers and patients about options, costs and choices can be transformative. It's not naïve to think so. The trouble is, that scenario requires universal access, a system that isn't solely focused on medical models of care, and the real work of sharing full information with patients and then listening to what they need.

What is the Patient Activation Measure in Patient-Centered Care?

Patient activation is a key concept in the push for patient-centered care, but is often conflated with the notion of driving patient engagement. However, patient activation is its own quantifiable concept supported by the patient activation measure (PAM).

Patient-Centered Care Starts With Patient-Provider Communication

Improving communication between patients and their providers is crucial to reforming the health care system to better meet patients' needs and improve patient outcomes. Strategies such as shared decision making and patient-centered medical homes, which encourage patients to play an active role in their health care and rely on strong patient-provider relationships, are founded on trust and communication.

"America's Health First": A Misnomer

On July 7, Tom Price, MD, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), announced the appointment of Brenda Fitzgerald, MD, as the 17th director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). To this position, Dr Fitzgerald brings her experience as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health, a role in which she championed infant health and survival, tobacco control, and obesity prevention.

Most patients want to know costs, financing options before treatment

HealthFirst Financial, a patient financing company, found the importance of patient financing options across the board. Overall, 29% of those surveyed said they'd move to a different provider that offered "attractive payment programs," according to HealthFirst Financial.

Designing a High-Performing Health Care System for Patients with Complex Needs: Ten Recommendations for Policymakers

Health care costs are heavily concentrated among people with multiple health problems. Often, these are older adults living with frailty, advanced illness, or other complex conditions. In 2014, the New York-based Commonwealth Fund, a private, independent foundation, established the International Experts Working Group on Patients with Complex Needs through a grant to the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The Pathway to Patient Data Ownership and Better Health

Digital health data are rapidly expanding to include patient-reported outcomes, patient-generated health data, and social determinants of health. Measurements collected in clinical settings are being supplemented by data collected in daily life, such as data derived from wearable sensors and smartphone apps, and access to other data, such as genomic data, is rapidly increasing.
