Golf tourney benefits Scholars program
Long ball hitters and short game specialists alike are gearing up for Wharton
County Junior College's 5th Annual Golf Tournament. Scheduled for 8 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the El Campo Country Club, the four-player scramble tournament will raise funds for the WCJC President's Scholarship Fund and the Presidential Scholars Program. The scholars program provides a select group of WCJC students with the opportunity to network with business leaders, volunteer at college events and attend a trip to Washington D.C. The entry fee for the tournament is $300 per four-person team, or $75 per individual. That includes a golf cart, green fees and lunch.

Volleyball team kicks off 2017 season
Initially delayed due to Hurricane Harvey, the Wharton County Junior College Pioneers volleyball team is now full swing into the 2017 season. The Pioneers are currently 4-5 overall with a 2-1 conference record, winning two games this past week with a 3-0 victory over Coastal Bend on Sept. 13 and a 3-2 win against Laredo on Sept. 16. Coach Brianna Florus welcomed back only four sophomores to the 12-player roster, but the freshmen have already stepped up to make some impressive plays in the early part of the season. The Pioneers next play on Sept. 26 against San Jacinto in Pasadena.

Senior Citizen Program hosts annual 5K
The Wharton County Junior College Senior Citizen Program will host its fifth annual 5K Stride & Stroll event this fall, and organizers say it's more important than ever to have a good turnout.  The more participants taking part in the event - scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11 in downtown Wharton - the more funds the program can raise to help defray the costs associated with providing food, educational and recreational services to the area's elderly.  And those services are needed more now than ever due to the recent flooding from Hurricane Harvey.

Projects create safer learning environment
Wharton County Junior College students attending classes this fall will be the first to experience the benefits of security upgrades thanks to a large-scale security system improvement project. Costing roughly $1.3 million, the project includes everything from exterior lighting to video monitoring to a cutting-edge door lock system that allows for remote lockdown of campus facilities. The overall purpose is to make the Wharton, Richmond and Bay City campuses as secure as possible. The college's Sugar Land campus falls under University of Houston security policies and is not included in the project.

AEL program offers free GED preparation
Obtaining a GED or learning more about the English language are both affordable and convenient thanks to Wharton County Junior College's Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program.  The program - which provides services for more than 1,200 students each year - offers both day and evening classes on various days and times throughout the college's service district to help accommodate students' busy schedules. The classes and instructional materials are entirely free of charge.
"Our goal is to help students improve their basic skills and enter post-secondary education or the workforce," said Tara Zekavat, Director of WCJC's AEL program.
