On September 8, 2017, NOACA held its Annual Meeting, "The Logistics of Regional Transportation," at Cleveland's Global Center for Health Innovation, drawing over 300 participants. Keynote speaker Jim Simpson, a transportation and logistics expert, engaged attendees with stories about his experiences as Commissioner of New Jersey's Department of Transportation, head of the Federal Transit Administration, commissioner of the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and owner of his own freight moving company.

Julius Ciaccia wins 2017 Ehrnfelt Award for Regional Contribution

At the Annual Meeting, NOACA announced that Julius Ciaccia, Jr., retired CEO of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, received the 2017 Walter F. Ehrnfelt, Jr. Award for Outstanding Regio
nal Contribution. The award is named for Walter F. Ehrnfelt, Jr., the late mayor of Strongsville and former NOACA Board member, who exemplified leadership, dedication and regional cooperation throughout his career.
Eligibility for the Ehrnfelt Award includes individuals, organizations and/or projects that strengthen regional cohesion related to infrastructure in NOACA's five counties.
Regional cohesion is exemplified by intense cooperation among the communities of these five counties to strengthen the competitiveness in various fields and offer the best development opportunities possible for the industrial and commercial life of the region, and thereby increase quality of life for the inhabitants.
Ciaccia led the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for a decade following his 30-year career as the City of Cleveland's director of public utilities and commissioner of water.

Executive Director Gallucci Receives Leadership Award

Permanent bicycle/pedestrian counter installed on Hope Memorial Bridge
The next time you ride your bike or walk on the Hope Memorial Bridge,
your trip will be recorded by
a new pedestrian and bicycle counter. This counter, similar to one installed last fall on Edgehill Road in Cleveland Heights, collects data 24 hours a day and will gauge how many people bike and walk on the bridge.
Thanks to $140,000 provided through an ODOT active transportation grant, 15 more bicycle and pedestrian counters will soon be installed in the NOACA region. The counters will supply information about how many people use bike/pedestrian facilities in the region and will help NOACA prioritize future projects.

Cleveland Clinic joins Gohio Commute
NOACA welcomes the Cleveland Clinic - the region's largest employer - to the Gohio Commute
family. Gohio Commute, the new ride matching and trip logging tool, helps users explore various alternatives for getting to work, including driving, walking, biking or taking transit. The tool also helps facilitate car and vanpool matches for ride sharing, which would  remove vehicles from the region's roadways, reduce congestion and vehicle emissions and improve air quality.
"The Cleveland Clinic is a demonstrated regional leader in many areas," said NOACA Executive Director Grace Gallucci. "They recognize the impacts of the drive-alone commute on community health. We hope that they will serve as a model for other Northeast Ohio employers for encouraging alternative commute modes." To find out more about Gohio Commute or to register, visit NOACA's website.

Apply now for 2018 TLCI planning studies and implementation projects
If you are interested in applying for NOACA Transportation for Livable Communities Initiative (TLCI) planning or implementation awards, the October 6, noon deadline is fast approaching. The TLCI is a unique and popular program that offers communities and public agencies federal funding assistance for the planning and implementation of transportation improvements that strengthen community livability.
TLCI planning
awards help fund planning studies that can lead to improvements to transportation systems and the neighborhoods they support.
Implementation
awards help communities move forward with the development and installation of infrastructure from past completed livability studies. Application forms for both planning studies and implementation projects can be found on NOACA's website.

Check out NOACA's Out of the Box planning workshop
On Wednesday, October 25, noon - 2 p.m., NOACA will  continue its Out of the Box planning series with a workshop focusing on the new Data Analysis and Reporting Tool (DART). DART organizes and collects data from NOACA's regional inventory, and allows users to query, analyze and output data.
The tool will provide data summaries on a wide variety of topics related to regional planning that is useful for making planning decisions.
