Patrick Warpinski DVM_91

When is a veterinarian more than a veterinarian? When they show as much care for people as they do for animals. That definitely defines Patrick Warpinski DVM'91, owner and operator of The Animal House in Green Bay. Along with providing veterinary care, boarding, grooming, and training, The Animal House initiated a local partnership to provide low-cost pet care for individuals in need. The Warpinskis also donate to local YMCA summer camp programs and sponsor a miniature veterinary medical clinic in the Green Bay Children's Museum, among other charitable endeavors.

New Interns and Residents
The SVM and UW Veterinary Care welcomed 29 new interns and residents this year -- graduate veterinarians who come to learn from our exceptional specialists while providing top-notch clinical care and services.

Support for Building Project
The Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee unanimously approved the Building Commission and Building Program omnibus motion, adding the lot 62 parking ramp to the Capital Budget. As Chancellor Blank  noted in a recent statement , the construction of this ramp "is a necessary step toward facilitating a badly needed expansion of the School of Veterinary Medicine." The university and SVM will continue to stress the need to include the planned addition to the Veterinary Medicine Building in the next state budget bill.

Shelter Medicine Assists with Dog Illnesses
In September, the SVM's UW Shelter Medicine Program worked closely with the Dane County Humane Society to diagnose and stop the spread of a contagious respiratory illness among dogs. Expedited testing services by the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory helped to speed the reaction.  The Shelter Medicine Program also this summer helped to treat and test dogs at the Joplin Humane Society in Missouri during an outbreak of canine distemper virus.

Summer Alumni Campaign
Ty Vannieuwenhoven DVM _89We had a wonderful response to the Summer Alumni Campaign and are happy to report that the campaign successfully raised just over $139,800 in donations and pledges, with many alumni giving for the first time. When we factor in the Morrie Waud Match, which gives alumni and other SVM family the opportunity to double, triple or even quadruple their contribution to our building expansion campaign, your gifts generated more than $318,000 in matching dollars, adding up to a total of $458,000! You can still take advantage of this generous matching opportunity; gifts starting at just over $8 a month qualify.

One of the donors from the campaign, Ty Vannieuwenhoven DVM '89, recently visited the SVM to share why he got into the habit of giving and why he thinks now is the perfect time to give. Watch his video message

Ongoing Clinical Trials

Dogs with Aspiration Pneumonia
The UW Veterinary Care Small Animal Internal Medicine service is recruiting dogs with aspiration (bacterial) pneumonia to determine if a measurable marker in the blood, C-Reactive Protein (CRP), helps to determine when to stop treating the patient with antibiotics.

Any dog with aspiration pneumonia may qualify for the study . Patients are treated as normal for aspiration pneumonia. Extra blood is taken for the special CRP testing. Patients return 7, 14 and 30 days after hospital discharge for rechecks, and clients complete several questionnaires regarding the pet's condition. There is no cost for the study follow-up exams. More
