This is our first community update since prior to Hurricane Irma which led to the campus being closed for six consecutive days. The superintendent has waived two make-up days under her authority. Last week the Florida Commissioner of Education also waived an additional two days as a result of required school closures.

For OCPS, this means we have a total of four instructional make-up days that have been waived. The two days that will be used as make-up days, which were previously prioritized, are:
  • Friday, October 27, 2017
  • Monday, November 20, 2017
This week we will be holding our annual Open House event which is split over two evenings depending on grade level (calendar below). This is a once per year opportunity for our families, so we do hope you will attend. Our PTSA is also running a Spirit Day this coming Tuesday with support from Domino's Pizza. If able, please participate as a percentage of these funds are donated back to our PTSA which in turn does so much for our students and teachers all year long.

I think you will enjoy this week's issue and I do hope that your family got through Hurricane Irma with as little difficulty as possible.

I'll see you at Open House! Thank you.

In KNIGHTS Honor,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.
Principal, Lake Nona Middle School

Knight Anti Bullying

Lake Nona Middle School's many responsibilities includes creating a safe learning environment that brings forth a culture of teaching and learning along with the virtues of #KnightsHonor: kindness, connection and curiosity. Our School Advisory Council (SAC) and PTSA sponsored over 600 students in participating in two anti-bullying programs this year.

Challenge Day involved 7th graders working together to create a school where everyone is included and thrives. The program was held in the gym and led by two energetic, highly trained facilitators. The program also addressed some common issues seen in most schools including cliques, gossip, rumors, negative judgements, teasing, harassment, isolation, stereotypes, intolerance, racism, sexism, bullying, violence, apathy and hidden pressures.

Soul Shoppe inspired a paradigm shift among our 6th graders to create a sustained climate of safety and eliminate bullying. Soul Shoppe supported our students by giving conflict resolution tools that allow them to support each other.

These innovative, interactive and highly effective programs gave these students an EXPERIENCE of empathy, transforming not only their behaviors, but the very way they see each other. Teachers, administrators, parents and students worked together to create a school community where everyone feels safe and celebrated.

Students broke out into small groups (above) and they all signed the "Be the Change" wall poster (left)

Knight Sports
Knight Soccer Teams are Division Champions!

Coaches look on during the Hunter's Creek game which our Knights won to take the Division Championship.
In case you are new to the Knight Kingdom or have not already noticed, IT IS GREAT TO BE A KNIGHT! Our soccer teams won all of their games this week, continuing to let their presence be known in their new division/cluster. These wins were so crucial they sealed the deal for our teams, naming them the Division Champions! Both teams are undefeated with one regular season game remaining.

Girls Highlights
Our Lady Knights have not let down ALL season! These girls have continued to dominate every game, having won their last four games by a pretty wide margin. Our girls team remains focused with their eyes on the bigger prize. Next week they plan to scrimmage our boys team for some competition in preparation for their last regular season game and playoffs. They are on a mission! Jenna Jimenez is a scoring machine. Valentina Mora has a leg on her and can score a goal from midfield if you let her. Demi Moore and Mackenzie Wagner have our defense on lockdown. Emily Torrez and Isabella Bonilla have a special gift, always maintaining control of the game and their teammates. Madeline Oehlers is a fierce 6th grader that starts for us with a bright future. Oh, and Coach Jones has all the time in the world to continue to strategize because there is nobody in PASS! This can be dangerous.

Boys Highlights

Lake Nona Middle School Boys Soccer Team, 2017 Division Champions

This past week our boys' soccer team played three games, as they had to make up a postponed game. Monday night they won 4-3 against a South Creek team that went down fighting to the very end. Wednesday was another close one as the game not only went into the 5 minute over time, but penalty kicks after being tied at 2-2 at the completion of 45 minutes of play. Each team attempted four on goal kicks and we came out on top with more goals than Freedom!

It now came down to Thursday's game for our boys' team. This was now the Division Championship game as Hunter's Creek and Lake Nona were the only two teams with no losses all season. We knew going up against Hunter's Creek, Cluster B's defending champions, that this one was not going to be easy.  We jumped on them early, our team captain, Alejandro Arvelo took control and scored two goals. Hunter's Creek responded back with a very quick goal, letting us know that they were going to do their very best to defend their division title. Before we knew it, the score was tied at 2-2. With less than one minute left, our defense made some amazing stops and advanced the ball well enough for our offense to convert and score the game winning goal! Hello Cluster B, we are the KNIGHTS!

Malachi Perkins has been outstanding all year! Ashton Marotta has been the defensive stopper! Raul Hernandez stopped 4/5 goals during the PK win over Freedom! Brandon Nugent has been strong up front in the last few games! Jackson Shiver has stepped up and provided consistent play! Dalton Morgan is so versatile! Dalton has sacrificed his offensive skills to play defense and hold together a position in high need! Aaron Presley for his speed and strength outside! Luis Valverde for always making the plays that many just don't notice!

Coach Hall gets the water bucket after our boys' team defeated Hunter's Creek 3-2 on Thursday

Congratulations to both teams and coaches (Coach Hall, Coach Johnson, Coach Jones, and Coach Cruz) on winning the division championship two years in a row! We are quickly running out of room in our gym walls for banners. Not to worry, we will find space and hang them from the rafters if we have to! Keep up the good work and best of luck in playoffs!

Knight Peace

Our chorus students participated in the International Day of Peace (September 21). All choirs took part in the project "AVoice4Peace"; a world campaign to get people from all over the globe to sing and discuss peace in their communities. We sang and discussed how we can be a voice for peace in Lake Nona.
