Fiscal Challenges Face Pennsylvania as 2017-18 Budget Process Begins

Last month, Gov. Tom Wolf kicked off the official budget process when he unveiled his 2017-18 budget plan to the General Assembly.  During his address, the governor struck a decidedly conciliatory tone. And in direct contrast to the last two years, lawmakers were cautiously receptive to many of the broad ideas included in the governor's proposal.

We are pleased to announce that on February 3rd, the Board of the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education unanimously named Karen Musante, current vice president & COO of the Foundation, as CEO Designee following the announcement of long-time CEO John Trombetta's retirement effective in January, 2018. Karen has been with PFEW for seventeen years, and has worked in all areas of fundraising, student and volunteer recruitment, budget development, strategic initiatives, program design and implementation, and other program management.  It's a time of great excitement and joy, and John and Karen hope to see many of their PACP friends and colleagues on their upcoming travels!

The Chamber will hold a PowerBreakfast Meeting on March 17 with the Honorable William Peduto, Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, as the guest speaker. The Chamber will also host a Winning Sales Techniques / Keep It Simple Workshop on March 21 with chamber member Joel Burstein, President of Keep it Simple Training and Development, leading the session.

The Chamber held its third annual Membership Recognition Night on February 16th at the Bryce Jordan Center.  Sponsored by Comcast Spotlight, the event served as a celebration of Chamber members, specifically recognizing three individuals who went above and beyond in their support of the CBICC in 2016.

The event will be held Wednesday, March 15 at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center.

The Chamber is having its 44th Annual Inspirational Breakfast at Valley Forge Military Academy & College on April 5th featuring guest speaker Big Brothers Big Sisters CEO Marcus Allen. He will be sharing his story of overcoming poverty and being told he would never go to college. Now with a Master's degree, he leads a 100-year-old organization that runs successful mentoring programs, in part through strong partnerships with employers that are committed to help younger generations succeed. Throughout its history, this very special breakfast, served by VFMA Cadets, has been described as a celebration of our lives as Americans. It is an acknowledgement of the privileges we enjoy each day. 
Meadville Western Crawford County Chamber
It's not just any organization that can mark more than two centuries of existence and still be going strong. The Chamber recently celebrated its 210th birthday celebration for its nearly 500 members at its offices on Diamond Park.

The Chamber will host a Northwest PA Chamber Professionals meeting on Wednesday, March 15 from 10:00am - 3:00pm at the Chamber's offices. The meeting is open to any chambers in the Northwest region of the Commonwealth of PA and will feature a roundtable discussion on topics of Chamber Choice, On Demand Energy, PACP overview, and the PACP Fall Conference. The Chamber held its Annual Celebration of Excellence January 20 at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh Airport. The event includes the Chamber's annual membership meeting, which includes recognition of outgoing and incoming Board members and officers of the Chamber and presentation of reports from Chamber committees. In addition, the Chamber presented Distinguished Service Awards to Hughie's Event Services, Roselea Farms, Quicksilver Golf Course, Multi Print Media, and Deb Gray and Ken Faux, co-chairs of the PAACC's Building Resource Committee. The Ambassador of the Year Award was presented to Denise Sinkavich of DDS Web Design, LLC, and the Sally Award, the Chamber's highest award, named after its former President, Sally Haas, was awarded to Frank Polito of Comcast. The Pittsburgh Airport Area Chamber Enterprise Foundation, the PAACC's charitable arm, awarded two $2,500 Sally Haas Scholarships, one to a student planning to study aviation, and one to a student whose parent either has served or is serving on one of the military bases in the PAACC footprint. The aviation scholarship was awarded to Dylan Osheka, and the military scholarship to Ryan Finnegan. The keynote speaker at the event was Rick Applegate of Cantor Fitzgerald Wealth Services, LLC. On February 16, a capacity crowd was on hand as representatives from the coal industry provided a Somerset County coal update at the Somerset Country Club. Rachel Gleason, executive director of PA Coal Alliance, George Dethlefsen, CEO of Corsa Coal, and Mikel Vaughn, business manager and CFO of AK Coal Resources Inc. offered insights into their companies as well as gave a look at the industry moving forward under the Trump administration.

The Chamber has launched a new initiative called Be Here, created to promote opportunities, attract and retain people, and create an overall positive attitude of the Venango County Area. A negative attitude among many community members in the area was noticeable, with comments such as "there are not jobs here" and "there is nothing to do here." Rather than letting it discourage them, the Chamber took this as an opportunity to promote the positive aspects of the Venango Area, including a great sense of community, low cost of living, outdoor recreation, community events, and so much more
