Research Spotlight
Two new
research studies show how well-crafted, simple reminders sent home to parents can inform parents and improve attendance. In one pilot, students whose families received the mailings missed 8 percent fewer school days than students in the control group. The messages sent home empowered parents to improve their child's attendance, says researcher Todd Rogers of Harvard.

Policy Spotlight
Healthy Schools Campaign just released Framework for Action: Addressing Chronic Absenteeism through ESSA Implementation. Done in partnership with Attendance Works, this brief explains different approaches that stakeholders might use to leverage ESSA to support efforts to address chronic absenteeism. Community Spotlight
In CA, Contra Costa County Office of Education's
attendance awareness campaign, called "Every School Day Counts: Attend Today, Achieve for a Lifetime!" crafts monthly themes and information for principals to send to families in school newsletters, created a free toolkit, develops webinars and hosts its own poster contest for students funded by local corporations. Winning posters are featured in a calendar and displayed on local buses!

Partner Spotlight
America's Promise leads an alliance of organizations, communities and individuals dedicated to making the promise of America real for every child. Its signature effort, the GradNation campaign, mobilizes Americans to increase the high school graduation rate to 90 percent by 2020. The just released 2017 Building a Grad Nation report shows that at 83.2 percent, the national graduation rate is at an all-time high. To meet 90 percent the nation must double its pace of progress and focus on the deep disparities that remain for specific subgroups.
