Young business people are always told if you want to succeed and move up in management, you need a mentor, someone who is a shaker and mover, on his or her way up the ladder and will help you do the same.

  

My experience has shown this to be very true.

  

Mentors, however, don't jump out of the woodwork and offer to help us in developing our careers.  We must scout them out and develop a relationship that will allow them to want to take us under the proverbial wing helping us along the way.

   

Look around, find someone who is going where you want to go and doing it the way you would like to see it done.  Yes, I'm talking a little ethics here.  Learning from and following someone who cheats, lies and steals will make you the same.

  

Good mentors are out there.  Most of us who have been successful in our careers have had at least one.  I know I did, learned a lot and went further in my career as a result.
