National postdoc appreciation week was September 18-21, and to celebrate we highlighted the fascinating research of five postdocs with our video series, "Research in a Minute."

The Student Health Center, in partnership with GUWellness and the Office of Faculty and Staff Benefits, will offer influenza immunization clinics for the 2017-2018 season for all Georgetown students, faculty and staff. The vaccinations are free but only with a valid Georgetown ID (GOCard) presented at the time of vaccination. They will be administered on a first-come, first-served basis. The on- and off-campus
schedule is now available.
Applications are being accepted for Global Health Initiative collaborative seed grants (fall round). These grants support research workshops that bring Georgetown faculty together with colleagues at other institutions to share research and develop formal proposals for outside research funding. Grants of up to $15,000 will cover eligible travel and meeting expenses. The deadline for submission is Thursday, October 12. Additional details can be found

Ranit Mishori, MD, has been selected as one of 10 national grantees of the Gold Foundation Research Institute's "
Mapping the Landscape, Journeying Together"
initiative. The goal of the initiative is to form a community of practice to make positive change in the field of humanism in healthcare. Mishori's project is titled "Beyond the Exam Room. A Scoping Review of the Benefits and Potential Harms of Screening for the Social Determinants of Health."
The Endocrine Society has selected Georgetown's Leonard Wartofsky, MD, as recipient of its
2018 Sidney H. Ingbar Distinguished Service Award
. This award recognizes distinguished service to the Endocrine Society and the field of endocrinology. Wartofsky, a professor of medicine, served as the Society's President from 2007-2008.

spoke on Capitol Hill Sept. 12 as an invited speaker at a
roundtable discussion
led by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) that focused on the opioid crisis. McCaskill is leading an investigation into how drug companies market opioids.

Georgetown University's Center for Global Health Science and Security announces the launch of a free, web-based tool that allows national leaders to calculate costs of developing the capacity to prevent, detect and respond to public health threats.
Frequent e-cigarette use does help smokers quit - a finding that Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center researchers say supports the use of e-cigarettes as a cessation aid for those trying to quit cigarette smoking. But, they note, an examination of a recent national survey uncovers important clues about who's successful at quitting and why.
