From Dr. Powers
|
Dear Jones Family,
Our school year is off to a very positive start. Planning is already underway for both our annual Open House on October 14 and Homecoming November 17. Details for both are forthcoming.
We received the very sad news this week that our beloved friend and colleague, Karen Stolzenberg, has passed away. Mrs. Stolzenberg taught visual arts at Jones since joining the staff in 1998. A National Board Certified Teacher, Karen taught nearly all arts classes in our curriculum, including metal smithing and ceramics, as well as serving as department chair. Generations of Jones students benefited from her expertise, love of the arts, and commitment to her students. Karen had just retired in June. She will be sorely missed by all of us.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at
pjpowers@cps.edu
or on my direct office line, 773-534-8606. You can also follow me on Twitter @PJOSEPHPOWERS.
Sincerely,
P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night
On the evening of Thursday, September 14, JCP hosted Back to School Night providing hundreds of Jones parents and guardians the chance to walk a mile (and then some) in their student's shoes. Attendees met in each of their student's classes for an introduction by the teacher and then navigated to the next class after each bell. Freshman parents attended an informational seminar conducted by JCP counselors.

Curious Jones |
Ever wonder what the Blue Ribbon banner hanging on the Jones building means and why we last achieved the status in 2012? Well, it's a BIG DEAL!
Bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education, the coveted Blue Ribbon School award is sought by public and non-public schools throughout the country. It recognizes school leaders who demonstrate a vision of excellence, hold their students to the highest standards, and achieve the state's highest graduation rates. Schools are eligible to apply for this prestigious status every 6 years. JCP was the first CPS high school to earn the Blue Ribbon award and is the only CPS high school to achieve it twice - 2006 & 2012!
Are you curious about something or someone at Jones? Have a unique tidbit to share? Send your questions and contributions to

Jones Commercial High School 1971 press photo. |
Contribute to the Annual Fund and help us celebrate 80 years of Excellence!
JCP has come a long way in 80 years! Established in 1938, our school was known as Jones Commercial High School and was an excellent all-female trade school for clerical and secretarial training. In a May 6, 1965 Chicago Tribune article, a graduate of Jones Commercial or, 'that Jones Girl,' was described as the secretary in the office who is attractive in appearance, pleasant, feminine, and who excels in basic office skills."
Very complimentary for the times, but
look at us now!
Our student body is robust and diverse with 1900 students. The class of 2017 earned $46 million in scholarship
funding while
90% of the class enrolled in a 4-year college including some of the best in the country. In US News and World Report's most recent "America's Best High School" feature, an assessment of 22,000 schools, JCP ranked #3 in Illinois and #110 in the nation.
In order to continue on this phenomenal trajectory, JCP relies on the ongoing support of its community. The FOJ annual fund, a critical resource for the school's academic, athletic, arts and extracurricular programming, needs 100% participation this year. We have set an ambitious goal of raising $250,000 in funds for the school.
Proceeds from the 2017-2018 annual fund will go toward countless programs that benefit the entire student body.
