COLTMAN, Sir Thomas (1781-1849)

A superb original collection of four legal documents demonstrating both the extremely limited and legally managed rights of women in the mid 19th century in Atlantic Canada. Starts with UK laws and legal procedure (first document) and links back to the legal and merchant elite in St. John's NB in 1849 (other 3 documents).

It was not unusual for women to "give up their legal rights" but what is very unusual is to have 4 original historical documents demonstrating this as offered here. The highly positioned UK lawyer, Sir Thomas Coltman one of the Justices of her Majesty's Court of Common Pleas at Westminster, New Brunswick prominent lawyer William J Ritchie and merchant, John Wishart with their signatures, made sure women's legal poor rights were enforced where necessary. Lots more research opportunity with these!... Click for more information and photos;
