After more than a year of consultation and discussion, the Qualitative Transparency Deliberations working groups have released a set of draft reports for public comment. These draft reports examine the meaning, practice, and norms of transparency, openness and explicitness, separately for different forms of qualitative research. We invite all political scientists to go to qualtd.net, read any of the draft reports that are of interest to them (via the "Draft Working Group Reports" menu), and provide comments for the working groups to consider as they finalize the documents this fall. Commenting will remain open until October 15, 2017. Read more.

Advocacy News & Updates
Current Funding Levels Extended to December 8, Appropriations Bills Advance.  On September 8, 2017 , President Donald Trump signed into law H.R. 601 , extending current federal funding levels and raising the debt ceiling until December 8. Since Congress' return from August recess on September 5, the Senate reported out of committee its Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies legislation , proposing flat funding for the Title VI and Fulbright-Hays programs at the Department of Education. In contrast, the corresponding House bill provides no funding for the Fulbright-Hays program.

The House of Representatives reported all funding bills out of committee ahead of the August recess. The House passed an omnibus appropriations package ( H.R. 3354) including National Science Foundation funding on September 14.  An amendment to the legislation  includes a 0.5 percent increase of funding for biological and physical sciences research at the NSF, while keeping overall funding levels for the NSF Research and Related Activities Account at the $30.2 million level. Without an additional offset, the increase threatens to shift funding away from other disciplines, including research in the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences (SBE) directorate. For more information about federal funding of political science research and education for FY18, see APSA's advocacy page.
