Burg Buys Local Week
St. Pete made it through Hurricane Irma and recovery is underway. Many have asked what they can do to help - here's your answer! The Sunshine City's locally-owned, independent businesses are integral to the unique flavor of our city. This week, business community leaders and City officials have come together to encourage residents to choose local and support neighborhood and locally-owned businesses in response to Irma's disruption.

St. Pete Rising: Oak and Stone to Open Inside New Downtown St. Pete Hyatt Place
Downtown St. Pete will soon be the home of a new neighborhood-style pizza and beer joint with a modern twist - self-serve draft beer and wine. Oak and Stone will occupy around 5,000 square feet on the ground floor of the new Hyatt Place at ONE St. Petersburg, directly across from the entrance to the popular music venue Jannus Live. This will be Oak and Stone's second location -- the first restaurant is based in Sarasota.

The $10 million proposal needs voter approval because the property, south of 7th Ave NE, was acquired in 1984 through a swap of waterfront land with the city. The deal allowed the city to extend its waterfront park system. In exchange, the Vinoy received more than 4 acres.

Tampa Bay Business Journal: St. Pete mayor launches post-Irma buy local recovery week
The city of St. Petersburg is asking residents to spend money at local businesses to help locals recover from the financial impacts of Hurricane Irma that occurred through business closures, power loss, damage or other related expenses.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency estimates as many as 40 percent of small businesses never recover from a disaster. "This is the time that we will possibly see local businesses and nonprofits close their doors," said Keep St. Pete Local founder and President

Creative Loafing: To offset Irma's economic dead zone, St. Pete declares next week 'Burg Buys Local Week'
Right around this time of year is something of an economic dead zone for restaurants and shops, especially in tourism-heavy regions like the Tampa Bay area.
Throw in a hurricane that drove the bulk of the population to either flee or lock themselves inside for days -

The Weekly Challenger: St. Petersburg's Black Poverty Rate Falls Again, Reaches All-Time Low
Last week, on September 14th, the U.S. Census released its newest data on poverty in St. Pete. Again this year, the federal agency registered a rapid decline in African Americans in poverty, pacing well ahead of non-blacks in the city, and blacks elsewhere in Florida.
Last September, the
Tampa Bay Times
reported a sharp drop in Pinellas County's black poverty rate in 2015, per a Census release that month. Follow-up analysis showed African Americans in St. Petersburg leading the trend with an 8.5 point reduction in their poverty rate, down from 35% in 2014 to 26% in 2015.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg council sets millage rate in first budget hearing
The City Council set the millage rate and gave initial approval to Mayor Rick Kriseman's $538 million budget at Thursday night's hearing.
The 6-2 vote advances Kriseman's fiscal blueprint to a final hearing Sept. 28 and the new fiscal year starts Oct. 1. Council members Jim Kennedy and Ed Montanari voted against the measure

Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman proclaims Buy Local week in St. Pete to quicken storm recovery
Mayor Rick Kriseman has proclaimed next week to be "'Burg Buy Local Week" in an appeal to residents to help small businesses struggling to recover from Hurricane Irma.
Deputy Mayor Kanika Tomalin presented the appeal to City Council at its Thursday meeting, saying the mayor has declared Sept. 24 though Oct. 1 as a week for residents to patronize local businesses.
