As we reflect on the past few weeks, our thoughts are with our FAU families as we continue to recover from the storm. We are thankful that our students, families, and community remained safe and we are here for assistance as we continue into the academic year. We understand the challenges students may face, as they begin to transition back into their courses, and the Dean of Students Office is here to provide support.

New Resource Site Available for Students

There are some common problems that college students face and they don't often know where to go for help. Students can meet with a counselor at CAPS for an initial appointment. Based on unique concerns and situations, a counselor might recommend individual therapy, group therapy, or relationship counseling.

Registration is now open. A 25% off discount (OPA25) is offered if you register before 9/30/17. Space is limited, registration is required and will close on January 28, 2018 at 11:59 p.m.

The Division of Student Affairs at Florida Atlantic University will host the Urban Male Initiative's Institute on October 27 - 28 at the FAU Student Union. The Urban Male Institute is designed to help students better navigate their college experience and build their connection to the university community. Students will be engaged through thought-provoking dialogues and presentations on self-awareness, involvement, and leadership. 
Encourage your student to join Owls Care, Student Health, Counseling & Psychological Services, Student Accessibility Services, plus dozens of vendors, on October 4, for the first ever  Healthy Campus Expo!
The FAU Career Center coordinates a  Healthcare Career and Internship Expo to provide students and alumni an opportunity to network with employers who have hiring needs within the healthcare industry. The event will take place on October 26, 2017 from Noon-4 p.m.

University Advising Services (UAS) helps your student develop and implement an academic plan for success at FAU.  Our advising program is based on the Appreciative Advising model, which is the intentional practice of asking positive, open-ended questions that help students optimize their educational experience and achieve their DREAMS, DESIGN a plan to achieve those dreams, and make necessary changes to ACHIEVE their goals.  The advisee and advisor are partners, and below are a few tips on how you can be an APRECIATIVE PARTNER with your FAU student.

Advance Registration for Spring 2018 Classes begins Oct. 30. Please encourage your student to meet with their Academic Advisor and not wait until this date!

Suggestions for Being a Parent/Family Partner In September
  • Discover: Ask open ended questions about classes and college life. You can ask what their favorite classes are, what types of course assignments they've enjoyed doing the most, what has surprised them the most, and how they spend their time outside of class.

K n o w i n g   Y o u r   S t u d e n t
First-Year Student
  • Class registration for Spring 2018 is next month and many first-year students may wait until the last minute to meet with their advisors. At a large research institution, it is best that students be proactive in meeting with Academic Advisors to formulate and approve course schedules. Encourage your student to reach out to their University Advising Services Advisor now so they can create their academic plan and confirm they do not have any holds on their account.
Second-Year Student
  • Your student may begin to explore their autonomy as  they begin their second year of college. "A natural outgrowth of achieving an individual identity is a desire for autonomy or independence from parents and families. This doesn't mean disconnection or detachment. In fact, the healthiest adolescents remain connected to family as they become increasingly self-directed and independent." (Johnson & Schelhas-Miller, 2011).
Third-Year Student
  • As your student approaches their final year, they may begin to question their major or career goals. Encourage your student to seek the assistance of the Career Center. "Even students who begin with clearly defined academic interests and goals often shift their focus and decide to pursue a different path. This can be a disconcerting process for students and parents alike. Your consulting skills will be valuable as you help your child explore goals and aspirations during the college years." (Johnson & Schelhas-Miller, 2011).
Fourth-Year Student
  • As your student begins their final semesters, talk with your student about their post graduation plans. Reassure your student that they have built an extensive network since having begun their freshman year.
